Il complesso è formato da diversi elementi che si sono sviluppati e modificati nel tempo. In cima a uno scenografico sperone di roccia si trovano il convento, che comprende anche un piccolo museo, e il santuario dell'Assunta detto della Madonna del Sasso, ai quali si ascende percorrendo due vie. Lungo la strada della Valle si snodano la chiesa dell'Annunciata e varie cappelle animate da gruppi statuari e dipinti murali. Sullo stesso versante si trovano pure le edicole della Via Crucis con bassorilievi in ghisa.
Secondo la tradizione il santuario viene fondato in seguito all'apparizione miracolosa della Vergine a fra' Bartolomeo Piatti da Ivrea, del convento di San Francesco di Locarno, avvenuta nel 1480, alla vigilia della festività dell'Assunta (15 agosto). Alla sommità del monte sorgono quindi le prime due cappelle dedicate alla Vergine Avvocata (il nucleo originario della chiesa dell'Assunta) e alla Pietà, consacrate nel 1487 e, alle sue pendici, la chiesa dell'Annunciata, consacrata nel 1502. Nasce così l'idea di erigere un sacro monte dove ricreare i luoghi santi, probabilmente sul modello di quello costituito dal frate francescano Bernardino Caimi a Varallo Sesia sul finire del XV secolo. Il complesso si sviluppa soprattutto nel corso del XVII secolo con la costruzione delle cappelle del sacro monte e la trasformazione del santuario.

Die Wallfahrtsstätte besteht aus verschiedenen Elementen, die sich im Laufe der Zeit entwickelt und verändert haben. Die Wallfahrtskirche Mariä Himmelfahrt, Madonna del Sasso genannt, und das Kloster mit einem kleinen Museum stehen auf einem spektakulären Felssporn, zu dem zwei Wege hinaufführen. An der Talstrasse liegen die Kirche Mariä Verkündigung und mehrere mit Skulpturengruppen und Wandgemälden geschmückte Kapellen. Von der Kirche Mariä Verkündigung führt die Via Crucis mit ihren von gusseisernen Basreliefs geschmückten Kreuzwegkapellen zur Madonna del Sasso hinauf.
Gemäss Überlieferung wurde das Heiligtum vom Franziskanerbruder des Klosters von Locarno Bartolomeo Piatti aus Ivrea dort gegründet, wo ihm 1480 am Vorabend von Mariä Himmelfahrt (15. August) auf wundersame Weise die Muttergottes erschienen war. Auf dem Gipfel des Hügels erheben sich daher die beiden ersten Kapellen, 1487 geweiht und der Jungfrau und Schutzherrin (der ursprüngliche Kern der Kirche Mariä Himmelfahrt) bzw. der Pietà gewidmet, am Fuss des Hügels die 1502 geweihte Kirche Mariä Verkündigung. So entstand die Idee zur Errichtung eines Heiligen Berges (Sacro Monte), vermutlich nach dem Vorbild des vom Franziskanerbruder Bernardino Caimi in Varallo Sesia gegen Ende des 15. Jh. erbauten Sacro Monte. Der Gebäudekomplex entwickelte sich vor allem im Laufe des 17. Jh. mit dem Bau der Kapellen des Sacro Monte und den baulichen Veränderungen der Wallfahrtskirche.

The complex consists of several elements that have developed and changed over time. At the top of a spectacular rock spur is the convent, which also includes a small museum, and the sanctuary of the Assunta known as the Madonna del Sasso, to which one ascends by following two streets. Along the road of the Valley there are the church of the Annunciata and various chapels animated by statuary groups and wall paintings. On the same side there are also the aedicules of the Via Crucis with cast iron bas-reliefs.
According to tradition, the sanctuary was founded following the miraculous appearance of the Virgin by Fra' Bartolomeo Piatti da Ivrea, from the convent of San Francesco in Locarno, which took place in 1480, on the eve of the feast of the Assumption (15 August). At the top of the mountain there are therefore the first two chapels dedicated to the Virgin Advocate (the original nucleus of the church of the Assumption) and to the Pietà, consecrated in 1487 and, on its slopes, the church of the Annunciata, consecrated in 1502. Thus was born the idea to erect a sacred mountain where to recreate the holy places, probably on the model of the one formed by the Franciscan friar Bernardino Caimi in Varallo Sesia at the end of the fifteenth century. The complex developed mainly during the seventeenth century with the construction of the chapels of the sacred mountain and the transformation of the sanctuary.
