Pyhänkasteenputous / Pyhäkaste Waterfall Virtual Cache

Pyhänkasteenputous on 17-metrinen vesiputous Pyhä-Luoston kansallispuistossa Pelkosenniemen ja Kemijärven rajaseudulla. Putous virtaa Kultakeron ja Ukonhatun tunturihuippujen välisen Isokurun pohjoispäässä kattilamaisessa painanteessa.

Pyhänkasteenputous saa vetensä läheisessä Karhukurussa virtaavasta nimettömästä tunturipurosta, joka laskee Isokuruun lännestä. Jyrkänteen ylitettyään vesi putoaa ensimmäiset metrinsä pienissä portaissa rinnettä hipoen, syöksyen loppumatkan vaaleana suihkumaisena ”huntuna”. Putouksen alla on kuoppa, josta vesi jatkaa matkaansa Pyhänkasteenlampeen ja sieltä edelleen kurua alaspäin.

Pyhänkasteenputous on tullut tunnetuksi sen kulttuurihistoriallisesti tärkeän taustansa ansiosta. Putous, lampi ja viereinen Uhriharju ovat kautta aikojen olleet saamelaisten pyhiä paikkoja. Nimensä putous ja lampi saivat pappi Esaias Mansveti Fellmanin toiminnan kautta, kun Fellman käännytti metsäsaamelaisia kristityiksi 1600-luvulla. Perimätiedon mukaan Fellman suoritti paikallisille saamelaisille joukkokasteen putouksen vedellä kesäkuun puolivälissä 1648.

Virtuaalikätkö sijaitsee Pyhä-Luoston kansallispuiston alueella, joten sinun tulee huomioida kansallispuiston säännöt alueella liikkuessasi. Isokurun alueella on liikkumisrajoituksia, joten merkittyjen polkujen ulkopuolella ei saa liikkua ja itse putoukselle ei saa mennä. Huomioi talvella lumivyöryvaara!

Tehtävä:

Pyhäkaste Waterfall is a famous 17-metre-high waterfall flowing in the Pyhä-Luosto National Park, in the border region of Pelkosenniemi and Kemijärvi municipalites. The waterfall flows at the north end of the Isokuru Ravine, located between the Kultakero and Ukonhattu fell tops.

The waterfall is fed by the water of an anonymous mountain brook, that flows in the nearby Karhukuru Ravine, and then falls to Isokuru Ravine. The water descends its first metres in small steps, and the rest of the drop height as a free-falling shower-like "veil". Below the waterfall is a pool, from which the water continues its way to the Pyhänkasteenlampi Lake and from there to the bottom of the ravine.

Pyhäkaste Waterfall is famous for its unique role in the area's cultural history. The waterfall, lake, and the adjacent Uhriharju Ridge ("Sacrifice ridge") have been sacred places for the local Sámi people for hundreds of years. Until the mid-1600s, before the spread of Christianity, the Forest Sámi people brought deer and their antlers to Uhriharju Ridge to be sacrificed in hope of a successful hunt. The present names of the waterfall and lake, however, originated in the 1600s when (Lutheran) minister Esaias Fellman Mansveti was traveling in the area proselytizing Christianity to the Forest Sámi people. According to tradition, Fellman performed a group christening for the local Sámi people at the waterfall in mid-June 1648.

Notice that this virtual cache is located in the Pyhä-Luosto National Park so you have to obey the rules of the park. It is allowed to go in Isokuru gorge restricted area only on the marked trail. Notice danger of snow avalanches in winter!
