DE SCHANDPAAL
Een schandpaal is een paal waaraan iemand als strafmaatregel werd vastgebonden en te kijk werd gesteld.
Het te schande zetten was in de eerste plaats bedoeld als een onterende straf, maar het stond het publiek vaak vrij de persoon die letterlijk "voor paal stond", te beschimpen of te bekogelen met rot fruit of andere zaken. Ook het spreekwoord "iets aan de kaak stellen" komt van deze straf.
De originele schandpaal bevindt zich op een stuk privé-grond, temidden een bosje (eigendom van de familie d’Ursel). Ze toont het wapenschild van het echtpaar de Stappens – Veranneman. Deze schandpaal is waarschijnlijk opgericht in 1750 door jonker Philippe de Stappens naar aanleiding van de plechtige viering aan het wethuis van Nieuwenhove ter ere van zijn intrede als nieuwe heer van Nieuwenhove, drie jaar na de aanvang van zijn heerschap in 1747. Ze toont dan ook het wapenschild van het echtpaar de Stappens – Veranneman. Uit kaartenmateriaal en archiefonderzoek weten we dat de arduinen schandpaal niet op dezelfde plaats staat als de vorige, houten, schandpaal maar een vijftigtal meter verder. Ook deze schandpaal is zeer waarschijnlijk tijdens de woelige Franse tijden op het einde van de 18de eeuw naar een privé-domein verplaatst.
Naar aanleiding van Open Monumentendag 1995 is een kopie van deze schandpaal op het St.-Pietersplein geplaatst (ironisch genoeg op ongeveer de plaats waar de schandpaal van de heerlijkheid Oostkamp stond).
De opdracht :
Projecteer uzelf terug in de franse revolutie (of de middeleeuwen), en speel een tafereel na die hier zou kunnen hebben plaats gevonden. Maak hiervan een originele foto waar u of uw gps op te zien is, en plaats deze bij uw log.

Un pilori est un poteau auquel quelqu'un a été attaché à titre de mesure punitive et exposé.
La disgrâce était principalement conçue comme une punition dégradante, mais le public était souvent libre de narguer ou de peler la personne qui se tenait littéralement devant eux ou de la peler avec des fruits pourris ou d'autres choses. Le dicton «exposer quelque chose» vient également de cette punition.
Le pilori d'origine est situé sur un terrain privé, au milieu d'un bosquet (propriété de la famille d’Ursel). Elle montre les armoiries du couple De Stappens - Veranneman. Ce pilori a probablement été fondé en 1750 par l'écuyer Philippe de Stappens à l'occasion de la célébration solennelle au domicile de Nieuwenhove en l'honneur de son arrivée en tant que nouveau seigneur de Nieuwenhove, trois ans après le début de son règne en 1747. Elle montre également la armoiries du couple de Stappens - Veranneman. D'après les documents cartographiques et les recherches archivistiques, nous savons que le pilori en pierre bleue n'est pas au même endroit que le pilori en bois précédent, mais à cinquante mètres. Ce pilori, lui aussi, a très probablement été transféré dans un domaine privé pendant la période française mouvementée à la fin du XVIIIe siècle.
À l'occasion de l'Open Monument Day 1995, une copie de ce pilori a été placée sur la place Saint-Pierre (ironiquement à peu près à l'endroit où se trouvait le pilori de la gloire d'Oostkamp).

THE PILLAGE
A pillory is a pole to which someone was tied up as a punitive measure and put on display.
The disgrace was primarily intended as a degrading punishment, but the public were often free to taunt or pelt the person who literally "stood in front" of rotten fruit or other things. Also the saying "expose something" comes from this punishment.
The original pillory is located on a piece of private land, in the middle of a grove (owned by the d’Ursel family). She shows the coat of arms of the De Stappens - Veranneman couple. This pillory was probably founded in 1750 by squire Philippe de Stappens on the occasion of the solemn celebration at the Nieuwenhove home in honor of his arrival as the new lord of Nieuwenhove, three years after the commencement of his rule in 1747. She also shows the coat of arms of the de Stappens - Veranneman couple. From map material and archival research we know that the bluestone pillory is not in the same place as the previous, wooden, pillory but fifty meters away. This pillory, too, was most likely moved to a private domain during the turbulent French times at the end of the 18th century.
On the occasion of Open Monument Day 1995, a copy of this pillory was placed on St. Peter's Square (ironically at approximately the place where the pillory of the glory of Oostkamp stood).
