Geocache Description:

Welcome to a short walk through Jersey history. This walk will take you to the Royal Square, the Weighbridge and finish in Liberation Square, and should take about 20 minutes. There are pavements and crossings all along the route.

We would like you to answer five questions, the answers to which can be found easily along the way. They can also probably be found online, but taking the easy way out will only be cheating yourself.

Starting at the World War One memorial, read the quotes. The question is, "What times are we living in?"

Crossing the road, heading south will take you to the Cenotaph.

Continue in a southerly direction, without leaving the pavement. As you go, look down. There are six inscribed granite stones set into the pavement, all dedicated to the suffering experienced during the Occupation. (There are some on the other side of the road as well, just don't get side tracked if you go to look!) The question is, "What was the name of the Ukrainian slave worker nursed back to health by Gasulla Sole?"

You should now be in an area called Charing Cross, a pillar with a toad on top across the road to your right.

Continue along to your left, along King Street, past the shops.

The fourth turning on the right takes you into the Royal Square. The Battle of Jersey was fought here on 6th June 1781. Sadly the namesake of the pub you are next to died during that battle, bravely defeating the French. You will notice on the wall of the pub many round patches, which cover up bullet holes from that battle. The question is, "How many bullet holes are there?"

Continue into the Square. Find the tribute to the Red Cross ship Vega. As you read the inscription around the outside, think for a minute about the bravery it must have taken to do this. The question is, "Who was the brave man who made the tribute?"

Whilst in the Square you could look out for the Liberation 60th anniversary memorial, the RAF stone and the piece of the Great War monument. Don't worry if you miss them, there are no questions.

Leaving the Royal Square via the southern most exit, you can walk through the grounds of the beautiful St Helier Parish church. Head down Mulcaster street towards the Weighbridge.

You will find a granite arch dedicated to the Jersey contingent that left the Island on the 2nd March 1915 to fight in the Great War. The question is, "To which battalion were the Jersey Contingent attached?"

Finally, using the zebra crossings, head west into Liberation Square. You will see the beautiful statue of some Islanders being Liberated. Pause for a minute and imagine the scenes in this very location on May 9th 1945. Imagine the joy and relief the Islanders felt after so long under Nazi occupation. There is no question here, but summoning up your best 'free at last!' pose, join the happy flag wavers for a photograph.

We hope you have enjoyed this little trip through Jersey history, and that it helps you remember that though we may be small, we have a rich past.

Please message your answers to us, and post your photos as normal. You can take it as a 'found', and once we review your answers, we will come back with any issues.
