Geocache Description:

LËTZEBUERGESCH

Esch-Belval

Belval ass e Site vun grousse Stolwierker, den no dem Réckgang vun der Stolindustrie zu Lëtzebuerg gelidden huet.
Dofir gesäit e Restrukturatiounsplang vir, dëse Site an e wëssenschaftlechen a kulturellen Zentrum ëm ze wandelen. Dozou gehéieren ënner anerem d'wëssenschaftlech Fakultéit vun der Uni Lëtzebuerg an d'Rockhal (déi gréisste Musikhal zu Lëtzebuerg, déi 2005 op gaangen ass).

D'Siderurgie

Tëscht 1909 a 1912 baut d'Firma Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks A.G. e neit Stolwierk zu Esch-Uelzecht, d'Adolf-Emil Wierk.
1911 ass d'Firma ARBED (Aciéries Réunies de Burbach-Eich-Diddeleng) duerch d'Fusioun an d'Acquisitioun vun de 3 gréisste Stolwierke zu Lëtzebuerg, gegrënnt ginn.

No enger detailléierter Studie, huet eng Kommissioun (déi vum Ministère de l'intérieur iwwerwaacht gouf) sech den 8. Mäerz 2002 vir den Projet vum Jo Coenen & Co architects and urbanists of Maastricht, entscheed.
Am Kader vun dem Projet kënnen méi wéi 5.000 Awunner an iwwer 20.000 deeglech Besicher vum Site profitéieren.
Deen neie Projet gesäit eng Surface vun bal 1,3 Milliounen m² vir. Dovun sinn 69 Hektar fir Gebaier an 30 Prozent fir gréng Flächen an ëffentleche Raum reservéiert.

ENGLISH

Esch-Belval

The site of the Beval suffered from the abandonment of steel production in Luxembourg.
To help to diversify after the period of steel production the site is doing an extensive regeneration program. The redevelopment plan, will turn the brownfield site into a large scientific and cultural center.
It includes the science faculty of the University of Luxembourg and the Rockhal, Luxembourg's largest music venue, which opened in 2005.

The steel era

Between 1909 and 1912, the company Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks A.G. built a brand-new steelwork at Esch-sur-Alzette, the Adolf-Emil factory.
In 1911, the company ARBED (Aciéries Réunies de Burbach-Eich-Dudelange) was created by the merger and acquisition of the 3 largest steelworks in Luxembourg.
In 1994, ARBED decided to change the steel production into long products (such as sheet piling) .
The steel production with iron ore in blast furnaces changed into electric arc furnaces using recycled steel.
With the closing of the last blast furnace in Esch-Belval in July 1997, 120 hectares were available for a re-conversion process.
This should encourage the economic development for the country and the southern region.

The Belval project

To find the best solution for the Belval project, an international urban planning contest was set up in 2001.
After a detailed study of the projects, a dialogue committee (supervised by the Ministry of the Interior) decided on 8 March 2002 to realize the project from the Jo Coenen & Co architects and urbanists of Maastricht.
The project will be able to accommodate more than 5.000 inhabitants and more than 20.000 daily visitors.
The new urban area extends over a surface of almost 1.3 million m². 69 hectares for building and important 30 percent are reserved for green and public spaces.
