Since becoming of age, I have been frequenting Las Vegas. Between gambling, conferences and just coming to enjoy time with my buddies, I have been here over 40 times, and am generally here several times a year at a minimum. The thing that has always stood out as my "Welcome to Vegas" is the airport artwork, specifically the David Phelps pieces in Concourse D; as soon as I see them, I feel like I'm back to my second home. When I started (became obsessed with) geocaching, I always dreamed of placing a virtual in this airport, so that others could enjoy the artwork like I have all these years, and obviously a new smiley never hurt anyone. Unfortunately, virtuals were defunct..until they weren't. So you can imagine my excitement when I received an email from Groundspeak saying that I had received a virtual reward WHILE IN VEGAS. And now, one of my geocaching dreams can become a reality. What you'll initially be looking for is Phelps' Horned Lizard Sculpture from the Desert Wildlife series. For Part 1 of this virtual, send me the answers to the following two questions:
Question #1: What are the approximate dimensions of this sculpture?
Question #2: When facing the front of the sculpture, you'll note framed artwork behind/above it; there's one picture slightly to the right and one slightly to the left, almost as if the sculpture was placed directly between them. Describe the two pictures.
Now that you've had a chance to meet the big awesome lizard and enjoyed the same welcome as I always do, it's time to get the real Vegas welcome. Directly to the right of the lizard (when looking into its eyes) is an escalator, or some stairs if you want to take the healthy way. Either way, go up to the next level and do an about face. You'll notice a large sign that says "Welcome to Las Vegas". Question #3: Between "Welcome to" and "Las Vegas", the sign also lists the airport name and county, in addition to showing some words in a rounded diamond-shape. Within this shape, which is right under the word "to", there are three words. What are the words? I hope you enjoyed this cache and artwork as much as I always do.
