Geocache Description:

The Tower - Durham Cathedral

I've been very fortunate enough to be awarded a Virtual this time round, so I thought I'd put it where I'd wanted to place a physical micro ages ago but wasn't able to.

So here it is, visit this UNESCO World Heritage site, enter the 900 year old Cathedral and then climb the 325 spiral steps up to the Central Tower which is now open to the public and perform three simple tasks. Yes, there is a small admission charge, but the views from the Central Tower are amazing and well worth the effort. You'll see Durham and the surrounding area from a totally different angle.

The Central Tower has just undergone a major refurbishment and has been closed to the public for more than three years, so if you've never been up then this is the perfect opportunity, and if you have been up in the past then a revisit is in order to see all the refurbishment. At the time of publication The Central Tower has just been reopened to the public (1st June 2019).

So, to log this cache as a ‘Found’ you have three easy tasks :-

Email or message me through my profile your answers to questions 1 and 2. Do not put these in your log, or photos of them.

1. Halfway up the spiral staircase there is a place to rest and then a long white corridor, what is the year on the ancient picture just before you go through the door to climb the second half?

2. As you arrive onto the open roof and go through the door to the outside, turn around and look above your head. What is on the green sign?

3. Take a photo of yourself, or of your GPS/Phone with the central flagpole and/or the wind anemometer in the back ground. Post this in your found log.

Please play fair and submit your answers as soon as you can. (at the time of logging or within a few days please) I really don't want to delete any logs, but will if the questions aren’t sent and a picture posted within 2 days.

Right, get up there and enjoy those amazing views. Photos of the views from the top are very encouraged on your 'found it' log.

Don't forget there's another brilliant Virtual 👻 GC7B951 The Cloister Bats!🦇 down on Terra Firma in the cloisters for you to also get, or for folk who aren't as able bodied and unable to climb the tower.

The important info bit :- The Central Tower is usually open Monday - Saturday 10am - 4pm, and admission is £7.50 for adults and free for children (8-17), children must be accompanied by an adult. You should be reasonably fit to manage the 325 steps up to the top of the Central Tower, although there are places to stop and rest on the way up. Sensible shoes are also a must. The North West Tower is also climbable and open to the public, but is only usually open for guided trips on Friday and Saturdays, your ticket allows you to climb both at no extra charge.
Any other info you may need including the phone number for the help desk can be found here - Cathedral Tower Info📞 they answer the phone from 10am contrary to the 9.30am time the website gives.

If planning a visit to Cathedral to get this Virtual then it may be wise to phone in advance to check it will be open when you are expecting to visit to avoid disappointment, in case or maintenance or adverse weather.
