Prvi učenci so prestopili šolski prag jeseni 1961 leta. Do izgradnje drugega prizidka v letu 1986 je v okviru šole delovala tudi podružnična šola Ježica, ki pa je bila ustanovljena kot samostojna šola že davnega 1870 leta.
Šola na Godeževi ulici je bila kmalu po izgradnji poimenovana po domačinki Danili Kumar, ki je bila za svoja dejanja med drugo svetovno vojno proglašena za narodno herojinjo.
Od ustanovitve šola deluje kot popolna osemletka. V septembru 2003 pa so pričeli izvajati devetletni program. Popolna devetletka je postala leta 2009.
Od leta 1993 delujejo na šoli tudi oddelki mednarodnega programa za učence od 6 do 14 let starosti. Od jeseni 2005 pa v okviru mednarodnega programa deluje tudi mednarodni vrtec.Vzgojno izobraževalni proces izvajajo slovenski vzgojitelji, vzgojiteljice in učitelji, učiteljice, v mednarodnem programu pa občasno sodelujejo tudi tuji učitelji, učiteljice.

Shortly after its construction, the school on Godeževa Street was named after the local Danila Kumar, who was declared a national hero for her actions during WWII.
Since its establishment, the school has been operating for a full eight years. In September 2003, they launched a nine-year program. The school start a complete nine-year program in 2009. Since 1993, the school has also had departments of an international program for students aged 6 to 14. Since the autumn of 2005, an international kindergarten has also been operating within the framework of the international program. The educational process is carried out by Slovenian educators, teachers, and foreign teachers occasionally participate in the international program.
