Le Trait-Carré de Charlesbourg et son Moulin
Instauré par les Jésuites en février 1665, le Trait-Carré est la première tentative de colonisation à l’intérieur des terres non axée sur une grande voie d’eau. L’implantation d’un nouveau système, appelé système radian, étonne par son originalité. Sa configuration en étoile diffère énormément des modèles connus jusqu’alors en conférant à chaque parcelle une forme trapézoïdale.
Quatre périodes importantes ont imprégné l’histoire du Trait-Carré sans altérer le cœur même de ce village traditionnel :
- De 1665 à 1840, mise en place de la structure cadastrale unique du Trait-Carré ainsi que des premiers établissements villageois aujourd’hui majoritairement disparus.
- De 1840 à 1950, construction des principaux bâtiments qui composent aujourd’hui le patrimoine de Charlesbourg.
- De 1950 à 1960, de nouvelles infrastructures urbaines commandées par l’arrivée d’une population banlieusarde s’ajoutent à la configuration traditionnelle du Trait-Carré.
En parcourant le circuit piétonnier du Trait-Carré, on peut constater la singularité de sa forme cadastrale qui marque encore la ville dans le tracé même de ses artères principales.
- Dans les années 70, la ville s’agrandit, elle fusionne en 1976 avec Orsainville, Notre-Dame-des-Laurentides et Charlesbourg-Est. Dotée d’équipements modernes qui servent ses 70 000 habitants, Charlesbourg est alors la troisième plus importante agglomération de la région de Québec.
Regroupée avec douze autres municipalités le 1er janvier 2002, Charlesbourg est aujourd’hui l’un des six arrondissements de la Ville de Québec.
Forte de l’intégrité territoriale qu’elle a conservée et ancrée à son environnement historique, Charlesbourg continue d’écrire son histoire. Quant au Moulin des Jésuites, il est érigé en 1742 sur une parcelle de la terre ancestrale de la famille Lefebvre. Le bâti est une construction en pierre d’aspect traditionnel avec lucarnes, pignons et toiture de bardeaux. Ce moulin banal est en fonction jusqu’en 1940 avant de subir d’importantes transformations. Avec les années, il deviendra tour à tour une manufacture d’allumettes, une boutique de forge, un atelier de charron, une boutique d’instruments aratoires et une fabrique de fer ornemental. La Ville de Charlesbourg acquiert le moulin en 1980 et décide d’en faire un centre d’interprétation de l’histoire. Rénové en 1990-1991, il ouvre ses portes en 1992.

The Trait-Carré de Charlesbourg and its Mill
Established by the Jesuits in February 1665, the Trait-Carré is the first attempt at colonization inland that is not focused on a major waterway. The implementation of a new system, called Radian system, astonishes by its originality. Its star configuration differs enormously from previously known models by giving each plot a trapezoidal shape.
Four important periods have marked the history of Trait-Carré without altering the very heart of this traditional village:
- From 1665 to 1840, implementation of the unique cadastral structure of the Trait-Carré and the first village establishments now mostly disappeared.
- From 1840 to 1950, construction of the main buildings that today make up the heritage of Charlesbourg.
- From 1950 to 1960, new urban infrastructures controlled by the arrival of a suburban population are added to the traditional configuration of Trait-Carré.
Walking through the pedestrian circuit of the Trait-Carré, we can see the singularity of its cadastral form that still marks the city in the very course of its main arteries.
- In the 70s, the city grew, it merges in 1976 with Orsainville, Notre-Dame-des-Laurentides and Charlesbourg-Est. Equipped with modern equipment that serves its 70,000 inhabitants, Charlesbourg is the third largest city in the Quebec City region
Grouped with twelve other municipalities on January 1, 2002, Charlesbourg is today one of the six boroughs of Quebec City.
Strong of the territorial integrity which it conserved and anchored to its historical environment, Charlesbourg continues to write its history. As for the Moulin des Jésuites, it was erected in 1742 on a parcel of the ancestral land of the Lefebvre family. The building is a traditional stone construction with dormers, gables and shingle roofing. This banal mill is in operation until 1940 before undergoing major transformations. Over the years, it will become in turn a match factory, a blacksmith shop, a cartwright shop, a farm tool shop and an ornamental iron factory. The City of Charlesbourg acquired the mill in 1980 and decided to make it an interpretation center of its history. Renovated in 1990-1991, it opened its doors in 1992.
