Op de prachtige art deco site Eperon d'Or, een voormalige schoenfabriek, beleef je de industriële geschiedenis van Izegem. Borstels en schoenen staan op het voorplan, maar er is ook veel aandacht voor de brede impact van de industrialisatie op de stad, de streek en zijn bewoners.
In Mechelen wonen de Maneblussers, in Kuurne de Ezels en in Gent de Stroppen. Izegem is echter de thuisbasis van de Pekkers 
.
Pek was alleszins een belangrijke grondstof voor de lokale schoen- en vooral borstelnijverheid. Arbeiders kleefden de bundeltjes grondstof in het borstelhout vast met pek. De pekpot en pektafel waren onmisbaar in de borstelfabriek. En een “gepekte borstel” stond lange tijd garant voor kwaliteit.
En toch is er weinig geweten over de herkomst en de samenstelling van de pek die men toen gebruikte. Heel waarschijnlijk ging het om pek van plantaardige herkomst en niét om een destillatie van hout, steenkool of petroleum. Dit soort “pek” kennen wij tegenwoordig onder de naam teer of bitumen.

At the beautiful art deco site Eperon d'Or, a former shoe factory, you can experience the industrial history of Izegem. Brushes and shoes are at the forefront, but there is also a lot of attention to the broad impact of industrialization on the city, the region and its residents.

🖤 Pitch was certainly an important raw material for the local shoe and especially brush industry. Workers stuck the bundles of raw material in the brushwood with pitch. The pitch pot and pitch table were indispensable in the brush factory. And a “pickled brush” guaranteed quality for a long time.
🖤 And yet little is known about the origin and composition of the pitch that was used at the time. It was most likely pitch of vegetable origin and not a distillation of wood, coal or petroleum. We now know this type of “pitch” as tar or bitumen.
