Il Ponte del Diavolo (Puìnt dal Diàul in friulano) è il simbolo della città di Cividale del Friuli (UD). Costruito in pietra a partire dal 1442 e ripartito in due arcate, poggia su un macigno naturale collocato nel letto del fiume Natisone, lungo il quale si può ammirare una scenografica gola. Il ponte è alto 22,50 m, poggia su tre piloni sviluppandosi per 48 m su due archi di larghezza differente (22 m e 19 m). L'asimmetria è dovuta alla posizione del masso su cui poggia il pilone centrale.
La leggenda
La leggenda narra che anticamente i cittadini di Cividale si riunirono in assemblea per escogitare il modo di costruire un solido ponte in pietra, che congiungesse le due sponde del Natisone.
Non riuscendo a concludere nulla, invocarono il Diavolo. Quest'ultimo si presentò con tanto di occhi rossi, coda, corna, offrendo il proprio aiuto per la realizzazione del ponte ma, pretendendo in cambio, l'anima del primo cividalese che vi sarebbe transitato.
L'assemblea accettò le condizioni del Diavolo, il quale in una sola notte edificò la struttura. Ci fu anche l'intervento della madre del Maligno che trasportò nel suo grembiule un grande masso (su quest'ultimo poggia ancor oggi il pilastro centrale del ponte) e lo depose nel bel mezzo del fiume.La mattina seguente il Diavolo pretese la ricompensa. Egli venne però ingannato, infatti, i cividalesi fecero attraversare il ponte da un cane. Il Diavolo cercò di distruggere la costruzione ma una Croce, seguita dal popolo, lo mise in fuga.

The Devil's Bridge (Puìnt dal Diàul in Friulian) is the symbol of the city of Cividale del Friuli (UD). The legend

Failing to get anything done, they called upon the Devil. The latter came with a lot of red eyes, tail, horns, offering his help for the construction of the bridge but, in exchange, expecting the soul of the first inhabitant who would pass through it.
The assembly accepted the conditions of the Devil, who built the structure in one night. There was also the intervention of the mother of the Evil One who carried a large boulder in her apron (the central pillar of the bridge still rests on the latter today) and placed it in the middle of the river. The following morning the Devil demanded the reward. However, he was deceived, in fact, the citizens bring a dog cross the bridge. The Devil tried to destroy the building but a Cross, followed by the people, put him to flight.
