El edificio Metrópolis es una de las construcciones más icónicas de la ciudad de Madrid. Situado en los cruces entre las céntricas y concurridas calles de Alcalá, Gran Vía y la pequeña Caballero de Gracia, se encuentra resguardado por numerosas edificios igualmente dignos de pararse un momento a contemplar, aunque el bullicio no parezca permitirlo.
Su ubicación se suele asociar al inicio de la Gran Vía, si bien realmente ésta comienza en el Edificio Grassy, también digno de verse, siendo la dirección del edificio Metrópolis realmente la del número 39 de la calle Alcalá.
Fue construido entre 1907 y 1911 de acuerdo a los diseños proporcionados por los arquitectos franceses Jules Février y su hijo Raymond, si bien fue Luis Esteve Fernández-Caballero quien llevó a cabo la obra. Para ello fue necesario derruir varias viviendas viejas, entre los que se encontraba la casa del Ataúd, llamada así por su angostura.
El primer propietario del inmueble fue la compañía de seguros La Unión y el Fénix Español, que colocó sobre su cúpula la figura del Ave Fénix con Ganímedes sentado en él (obra del escultor René de Saint Marceaux), al ser éste el emblema de la compañía. Sin embargo después de la venta del edificio, la figura se reubicó a los jardines de la sede de Mutua Madrileña en el Paseo de la Castellana 33. La estatua que podemos ver ahora es la Victoria Alada, obra de Federico Coullaut-Valera, autor de otras esculturas como el Monumento a Cervantes situada en la Plaza de España.
Actualmente el elegante interior no es visitable, por lo que hemos de conformarnos con su exterior de estilo neorrenacentista con influencia francesa y columnas corintias. La cúpula de pizarra está espectacularmente adornada con 30.000 panes de oro de 24 quilates, lo que le hace brillar más que ningún otro edificio de su entorno por el día, mientras que por la noche 205 focos se encargan de hacerlo resplandecer.
Por la superficie de las fachadas se distribuyen varios grupos escultóricos que aumentan aún más su valor. El principal es el situado al pie de la cúpula, obra de Mariano Benlliure. Rodeando la torre encontramos otras esculturas, alegorías del Comercio, la Agricultura, la Industria y la Minería, obras de Paul Landowski , René de Saint Marceaux y L. Lambert.
El caché.
Dado que el edificio está en obras de restauración, para firmar este caché tan sólo tendrás que enviar en la firma una foto tuya, de tu alias escrito en un papel o de algún rasgo o avatar de tu perfil de geocaching, con el edificio Metrópolis al fondo. Hay dos waypoints desde los que tendrás buena perspectiva para sacarla y también para disfrutar del edificio.

The Metropolis Building is one of the most iconic monuments of the city of Madrid. It’s placed on the crossroad between the centric and crowded Alcalá and Gran Vía streets, and the small Caballero de Gracia Street. It is sheltered by many other buildings that you can enjoy little by little in spite of the noisy activity at this place.
People usually think that the lopcation of this magnificent house is the beginning of Gran Vía, but actually this Street starts on Grassy Building that it’s also quite a sight. In any case the official address of Metropolis Building is the 39th of Alcalá Street.
It was built between 1907 and 1911 according with the patterns given by the French architects Jules Février and his son Raymond, but finally the construction was carried out by Luis Esteve Fernández-Caballero. Previously, It was necessary to demolish some homes like “La Casa del Ataúd” (literally “The House of the Coffin”), called by this name due to its narrowness.
The insurance firm La Unión y el Fénix Español was its first owner, they put over the Dome the figure of the Phoenix with Ganymede sitting on its wing (made by René de Saint Marceaux), as symbol of that company. However after selling the building, the sculpture was moved to the gardens of headquarters of the other insurance firm Mutua Madrileña, placed on the 33th of Paseo de la Castellana. The figure we can see now is the Wing Victory made by the artist Federico Coullaut-Valera, also known by other sculptures works like the monument dedicated to the writer Miguel de Cervantes, placed in Plaza de España.
Currently, it is not allowed to visit the fashionable inside of the building, so that we have to resign ourselves with its French-like outside with its Corinthian columns, a good example of the Neorenaissance architecture. The slated dome is spectacularly decorated with 30.000 24-carat gold leafs, that make it glitter more than any other building in the surroundings at daylight, whereas at night 205 flashlights illuminate it and give it a fantastic look.
There are some sculptural ensembles in front of the building that increase even more the worth. The main group is located at the base of the dome sculpted by Mariano Benlliure. Surrounding the tower there are some allegories of Mining, Agriculture, Industry and Commerce, made by René de Saint Marceaux, Paul Landowski and L. Lambert.
The Cache.
To sign the cache and due to the building is currently covered with a scaffolding, only you will have to attach in the signature, a photo of you or your nickname written in a paper, so that the Metropolis Building was visible behind you (or your nickname).
