Berat, located in central Albania 120 km from Tirana, comprises a unique style of architecture with influences from several civilizations that have managed to coexist for centuries throughout the history. The city, nicknamed also as "Town of a Thousand Windows", was designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.
The city of Berat features a castle, locally known as the Kala, most of which was built in the 13th century, although its origins date back to the 4th century BC. It has been continuously inhabited from ancient times down to the present day and in the area contains many Byzantine churches and Ottoman mosques. It’s courtyard offers spectacular views of the city and the valley below. The obverse of 10 Lekë coin has featured the contours of the Berat castle.
Since the castle is still inhabited, it is open 24/7, but as a tourist you will have to pay small entrance fee at the main gate (during our visit it was 100 Lekë/1 Euro per person) between 9-18.
During our trip to (North) Macedonia and Albania in October 2019, we spent a day in this city. Please accept our invitation to this beautiful place. To log this cache, take a photo of your favourite place/view in the castle with you or your personal item and attach it to the log(!). Do not send us the image(s) to email or through message center, please.
