Geocache Description:

This listing will take you to a large road sign, marking Anzac Highway, the main road south west out of Adelaide. However, something far more impressive is hidden within sight. Please note, there is no need to enter Keswick Barracks, and doing so is illegal unless you have a valid reason to be there.

At GZ behind a brush fence is Flagstaff House, a heritage defence property. Unfortunately visiting it is not possible, but it is visible from public walkways and roads, and can be admired from afar. Originally the base commanders home, it played host to many personnel from all three services for many years. It was built in 1936, it's first occupant being Brigadier Athelstan M. Martyn, CMG, DSO. It remained an Army residence until 1992, when it became the residence of the Head of Defence Centre (generally, the most senior officer of the three services in the state).

I was lucky enough to visit Flagstaff House on a number of occasions. The Hall side table had in its top draw, a list of every occupant, their rank, position, and duration of stay going all the way back to 1936. Sadly, the last occupants, the then senior naval officer for South Australia, Commander Alan Williams and wife, moved out in late 2015. Since then the house has remained empty and unused, like the smaller house to it's south (since 2010) that once housed the base 2IC.

Flagstaff House was highlighted in the 1996 DHA publication 'The Heritage Homes of the Australian Defence Force', which which DSA have kindly put online here, since it is long out of print. It, and the other homes highlighted, make for interesting reading, and I encourage you to take the opportunity to learn about some of these historic homes.

To log this Virtual, please submit a photo, with either Flagstaff House, or the Anzac Highway sign, in the background. You may be as creative as you like, and may include yourself (no face required).
