Die wahrscheinlich älteste Legende über Mürzhofen geht fast 4000 Jahre zurück. So alt, glaubt man, ist der Kultstein, der in der Nähe des Dorfes gefunden wurde. Es handelt sich dabei um ein Megalithbauwerk. Die ältesten im Bereich der Kulturanlage gefundenen Tonscherben reichen bis in die ausgehende Jungsteinzeit (etwa 2000 vor Christus) zurück. Auf dem Schwemmhügel fanden Sammler Tongefäßfragmente aus der früheren und späteren Bronzezeit. Ein weiterer bedeutender Fund ist ein von Menschenhand aufgestellter Menhir, der sich einen Kilometer entfernt von der behauenen Steinanlage befindet.

Auch wenn noch nicht vollends klar ist welchen Sinn diese Steinbauwerke hatten, so glauben Heimatforscher, dass sich im Mürztal durch seine einst sehr abgelegene Lage eine eigene Kultur etabliert hat, deren Riten lange Zeit unbeeinflusst blieben. Man geht heute davon aus, auch aufgrund von archäologischen Funden, dass rund um Mürzhofen Menschen schon seit Jahrtausenden gesiedelt hatten. Manche Funde konnten auf 1700 vor Christus datiert werden. Die Spuren in Mürzhofen sind die ältesten im Mürztal, von daher kann man davon ausgehen, dass sich hier in der Bronzezeit schon eine Art Siedlung befunden hat. Die Kultstättenfunde in den Wäldern sind Zeugen davon, dass sich auch damals schon Riten etabliert hatten.

It is assumed today, also based on archaeological finds, that people around Mürzhofen had been settling here for millennia. Some finds could be dated to 1700 BC. The traces in Mürzhofen are the oldest in the Mürz Valley, so it can be assumed that there was a kind of settlement here in the Bronze Age. The finds of cult sites in the forests are evidence that rites had already been established at that time.
