Geocache Description:

  3. Na kateri datum so postavili spomenik?

ENG: Frederic Baraga (Slovene: Friderik Baraga) was a Slovenian Roman Catholic missionary, bishop and traveler. Because of his work he is proposed for beatification.

He was born on 28. 6. 1797 in Mala vas near Dobrnič as fourth child of father Janez Nepomuk Baraga and mother Marija Katarina Jožefa. He was baptized as Irenej Friderik Baraga, but he never used his first name. The family was quite wealthy and religious, therefore they take special care about the education of their children.

After his parents death Frederic lived in Ljubljana and Moravče. He studied law in Vienna and in 1821 finished it with a degree. After that he switched to theology and in 1823 became a priest. First he served four years as a chaplain in Šmartin near Kranj (Church of St. Martin in Stražišče near Kranj), later he served for two years in Metlika. He was extremely popular by his believers, but not so much by other priests.

In 1830 he went to USA where he became a missionary. He worked with Ottawa and Ojibway tribes. In 1852 he became a bishop in Cincinnati Ohio. He spent his last years in a city Marquette, where he died on 19. 1. 1868. He is buried in Marquette.
