Begijnhof Kortrijk
Het ontstaan van Begijnhoven zoals dat van Kortrijk is een uniek verschijnsel voor onze regio, waarvan de oorsprong teruggaat tot de 13de eeuw. In verschillende steden in Vlaanderen vormden ze een vast onderdeel van het stadslandschap en kenden ze een soms bewogen geschiedenis.
Het Begijnhof van Kortrijk werd vermoedelijk in 1238 door gravin Johanna van Constantinopel gesticht en is één van de belangrijkste historische sites in de binnenstad. Het is een combinatie van een straten- en pleinbegijnhof en heeft ondanks de uitbreidingen zijn integriteit en authenticiteit doorheen de eeuwen weten te bewaren. Bovendien telt het Begijnhof 41 woningen, waarvan geen twee woningen hetzelfde zijn.
Deze ‘stad in de stad’ valt op door de ligging pal in het centrum van de stad, zichtbaar vanaf de markt, en geprangd tussen de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk en de Sint-Maartenskerk. Van alle door Unesco erkende begijnhoven is dat van Kortrijk het enige dat zo nauw verweven is met het centrum van de stad. Ondanks het feit dat het, zoals de meeste begijnhoven, aan de rand van de middeleeuwse stad was opgetrokken.
Het Begijnhof van Kortrijk is ook nauw verweven met de geschiedenis van de gravinnen van Vlaanderen die in Kortrijk hun thuishaven hadden. Zonder die grafelijke bescherming zou de begijnenbeweging in Vlaanderen nooit tot bloei zijn kunnen komen.
Het Begijnhof is vrij en gratis toegankelijk van 9u tot 21u.

Beguinage Kortrijk
The origine of a Beguinage, such as that of Kortrijk is a unique phenomenon for our region, whose origins date back to the 13th century. In various cities in Flanders they formed a permanent part of the urban landscape and they had sometimes a turbulent history.
The Beguinage of Kortrijk was probably founded in 1238 by Countess Johanna of Constantinople and is one of the most important historical sites in the city center. It is a combination of a street and square beguinage and despite its expansions it has managed to preserve its integrity and authenticity throughout the centuries. Moreover, the Beguinage has 41 homes, of which no two are the same.
This "city in the city" stands out because of its location right in the center of the city, visible from the market, and squeezed between the Church of Our Lady and St. Martin's Church. Of all beguinages recognized by UNESCO, that of Kortrijk is the only one that is so closely intertwined with the center of the city. Despite the fact that, like most beguinages, it was built on the edge of the medieval city.
The Beguinage of Kortrijk is also closely intertwined with the history of the countesses of Flanders who had their home in Kortrijk. Without that protection, the beguine movement in Flanders could never have flourished.
