Fort Mackinac (pronounced: MACK-in-awe) is a former British and American military outpost garrisoned from the late 18th century to the late 19th century in the city of Mackinac Island, Michigan, on Mackinac Island. The British built the fort during the American Revolutionary War to control the strategic Straits of Mackinac between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, and by extension the fur trade on the Great Lakes. The British did not relinquish the fort until fifteen years after American independence.
Fort Mackinac later became the scene of two strategic battles for control of the Great Lakes during the War of 1812. During most of the 19th century, it served as an outpost of the United States Army. Closed in 1895, the fort has been adapted as a museum on the grounds of Mackinac Island State Park.
Why This Location:
Fort Mackinac has long been one of my favorite features of Mackinac Island. My parents brought me here to tour the fort during my first visit to the island as a child. When I was awarded a virtual cache during the second round of Virtual Rewards, this was the first place I thought of to place it.
How to Claim a Find:
To be able to claim a find on this virtual cache you must do one simple thing. You must post a picture of yourself with Fort Mackinac in the background at the posted coordinates with your found it log. That's it!
The pictures must be from the posted coordinates. I will not accept pictures from any other location. You're going to have to earn that terrain rating! Any logs that do not have the required picture included will be deleted without notice.
Other Information:
Although I recommend it, you are not required to pay any admission to Fort Mackinac to complete this virtual cache. If you do decide to take a tour, please post some photos of your experience along with your log, especially if you get to fire the cannon!
