Le singe, animal accroupi, malicieux, qui se gratte la joue de la main gauche, est placé juste à côté du porche de l’hôtel de ville de Mons.
Histoire :
Ce primate, dit “du Grand Garde”, d’origine inconnue et datant de plusieurs siècles (XVème? XVIIème?), a été placé là pour des raisons inconnues… En 1843, R. Chalon désigne déjà le singe dans une notice consacrée à l’hôtel de ville.
L’histoire du petit singe repose en fait sur trois hypothèses largement répandues à Mons :
- Il est peut-être le chef d’œuvre d’un forgeron voulant accéder à la maîtrise dans sa profession. Et on sait que le singe fut un animal particulièrement en vogue durant le Moyen Âge.
- Il est peut-être l’enseigne d’une taverne qui se trouvait dans les caves de l’Hôtel de Ville. Cette « taverne » fut supprimée en 1897 ou vers 1903 / 1904.
- Il est peut-être aussi un pilori pour enfants « turbulents » au Moyen-Age. En atteste, le bout de métal que l’on aperçoit entre les deux pieds...
Légende :
Il suffirait de lui caresser le haut du crâne avec la main gauche pour voir son vœu devenir réalité, ou encore obtenir de la chance pour toute l’année à venir…
C’est depuis 1930 qu’il est devenu le porte-bonheur de la Ville de Mons grâce à cette légende créée par P. Heupgen.
En atteste le crâne poli par les innombrables mains qui l’ont caressé à travers les années.

The monkey, a crouching, mischievous animal, scratching its cheek with its left hand, is placed right next to the porch of Mons town hall.
History:
This so-called “Grand Garde” monkey, his origin is unknown (XVth? XVIIth?), was placed there for unknown reasons ... In 1843, R. Chalon already designated the monkey in a notice devoted to City Hall.
The story of the little monkey is in fact based on three widely held hypotheses in Mons:
- He may be the masterpiece of a blacksmith seeking mastery in his profession. And we know that the monkey was an animal particularly in vogue during the Middle Ages.
- It may be the sign of a tavern that was in the cellars of the Town Hall. This "tavern" was suppressed in 1897 or around 1903/1904.
- It may also have been a pillory for "turbulent" children in the Middle Ages. Evidenced by the piece of metal that can be seen between the two feet ...

Since 1930 it has become the lucky charm of the City of Mons thanks to this legend created by P. Heupgen.
The skull is polished by the countless hands that have caressed it over the past years.
