Aysgarth Edwardian Rock Garden is privately owned, but open to the public during the day. The co ordinates will take you to the gate. No payment is necessary, although a donation goes towards the upkeep. This Rock Garden is Grade 2 listed and stands on a small walled site, it was constructed by the Backhouse firm of York and is a rare surviving example of their work. It was designed as a kind of 'walk through grotto', with huge limestone formations, narrow winding paths, a stream and cascade all add to the charm of this amazing garden. The rock garden has had several owners, and it was saved from developers in 1988 by being given Grade 2 listing status. It is well worth a visit, and certainly worthy of the recent gift I was given of a Virtual Cache. Why not also visit the nearby Aysgarth Falls, another beautiful example of limestone at its best within the Yorkshire Dales. This is not suitable for wheelchair or pushchair access due to the uneven paths. Parking, whilst limited, is available within the village, but please do not park in front of the gardens' gate.
