Martin Van Buren was born on December 5th, 1782, in Kinderhook, New York. Where opened his own law practice in 1803. Martin married a childhood sweetheart Hannah Hoes, the couple had 4 children. Hannah passed away in 1819 from tuberculosis. Martin would never remarry.
Martin from 1812-1820 would run for 2 terms of the New York State Senate, also held the position of the State Attorney General. In 1821 he would be elected to the U.S. Senate. He created an political organization called the Albany Regency while in the U.S. Senate. After John Quincy Adams won the presidency, Van Buren led the opposition to his administration and helped form a group of Jeffersonian Republicans that Andrew Jackson in 1828 Presidential Election. This group emerged as a new political entity, the Democratic Party. In 1828 Martin left the Senate and ran successfully for the Governor of New York State, which he held until Andrew Jackson won the President of the United States and named Martin his Secretary of State.
After he resigned in 1831 he had Jackson's Support to become the Minister to Britain. In 1836 Martin Van Buren won the Presidential Election over William Henry Harrison of the Whig Party. Shortly after taking Office the Great Depression would begin. He was able to form an establishment of Federal Funds that had moved to State Banks, though there was a lot of debate over this. Most Conservative Democrats started to go toward the Whig Party. With the Depression and a Long war with the Seminole Indians in the State of Florida, he lost the 1840 reelection campaign to William Harrison. In 1844 Martin attempted to get the Democratic Bid for President which he was not successful. He did run on the Free Soil Party for President that Year, He lost the election.
In 1848, Van Buren retired back to His Kinderhook Estate, Lindenwald, he completed his autobiography which had insight of the political era. Van Buren Died in 1862.
