Whispering Giant.
Artist: Peter Wolf Toth.
Every state in the USA has at least one huge wooden sculpture of the indigenous people of the area. All of these wooden sculptures were carved by a Hungarian-born artist, Peter Wolf Toth, who as a young adult, made a decision to carve a Whispering Giant in each of the fifty states to honor the local Indian tribes. He studied the Native Americans of the area, then visualized a likeness within the huge log provided him. The sculpture that is created is a composite of all the physical characteristics, especially facial features, of each local tribe or tribes, as well as their stories and histories.
The sculpture in the Tri-Cities is based on a chief of the Cherokees and is named "Junaluska". Toth's sculptures all across the country have been pinpointed by Geocachers and are each awaiting your visit. We are lucky to have one of his statues in Johnson City. Please stop by to gain a find on this virtual cache. A virtual cache does not have a log to sign. Please log a picture of yourself with Junaluska and post it in your log, and there is a question for you to answer. Please send the answer to the CO and then log your find with a comment (but not the answer). The question for this virtual is: From which three tribes does the composite of Junaluska represent: Cherokee and what else? The answer is on the plaque at the statue.
