Life's a Beach #90 - Axmouth Undercliff
I have lived in Axmouth for 5 years and have always wanted to set a cache incorporating part of a little used beach as well as a track leading to a wonderful view of the beaches below. Well, as I was recently lucky enough to receive a virtual cache reward, here's that cache!
There are 3 tasks that you have to perform to log this cache:
1. Posted co-ordinates - please email/message to let me know what natural feature makes its appearance on the beach at these co-ordinates. Please do NOT post the answer as part of your log. I have never seen the tide up to the top of the beach at this point but please be aware that this may possibly happen (so please check tide times).
2. Waypoint 1 (sculpture) - please email/message to let me know what animal is featured as the hanging sculpture at these co-ordinates. Please do NOT post the answer as part of your log.
3. Waypoint 2 (viewing point) - so now onto the difficult part. This task will mean that you have to ascend sharply from the beach up the slope behind. The path can get very slippery and as you are climbing, remember that you will have to get back down the slope again (shuffling on your backside is recommended). It is also recommended to wear shoes with a very good grip and do not attempt this climb in bad weather or at night. So basically, TAKE EXTREME CARE with your ascent up and descent down the very steep slope.
To access the path go to the left and behind the sculpture at Waypoint 1 and you will find a 3 foot wall. Go over this wall and climb the path that starts behind it. Once you arrive at Waypoint 2, you will find a 4 foot hawthorn bush on your right hand side (well, it's prickly). Turn around end enjoy the view (I can almost guarantee that you won't have been up this path before!).
As it's a virtual cache, there is no physical cache present but to prove that you have made it to the top, please post a photo as part of your log of you/your GPS/other item of your clothing with the view below.
Optional task if you have an altimeter - as part of your email to me, please let me know the height shown on your altimeter at waypoint 2 (just so you can see how many metres have you climbed in a very short distance!). Again, please don't include your answer as part of your log.
If you have some time, continue up the path to check some rarely visited parts of the Undercliff, but remember to please keep to the path and do not disturb any wildlife/plant life in this SSSI area. Please also bear in mind that you will have to return down the path which you have come up, so please don't go too far along the path.
