FR: Bâtiment classé monument historique, le marché central implanté à proximité de la rue piétonne, sur une place tracée au XVII ème siècle, est le plus ancien de la ville. Dès le milieu du XIXème siècle, une halle en bois est construite pour abriter les marchandes.
Détruite par un incendie en 1871, la nouvelle halle fut inaugurée en 1874. Elle témoigne de la vogue pour l'architecture métallique à la fin du XIXème siècle et constitue un modèle représentatif de ce type d'édifice qui allie légèreté du métal et nouvelles exigences d'hygiène, d'espace, de commodité et de sécurité.
Le marché central était à l'origine dévolu aux maraîchers. L'activité commerciale liée aux nombreuses marchandes installées dans et autour du marché, dans la rue, sur le trottoir, fut à l'origine d'un engouement quasi permanent des rues Frébault, Peynier et Schoelcher, causant des difficultés de stationnement et des embouteillages. En 1983, les maraîchers quittèrent le marché central pour le nouveau marché de Bergevin.
Le marché central est le marché le plus célèbre de Pointe-à -Pitre, il est aussi appelé abusivement marché Saint-Antoine du nom d'un magasin de tissus tout proche, aujourd'hui disparu.
Les marchandes, dont certaines sont vêtues du costume traditionnel et de la coiffe en madras, y vendent punchs, vanneries, objets de piété, fruits et épices aux senteurs enivrantes. On y trouvent également des plantes médicinales, des philtres d'amour (dont le célèbre bois bandé, réputé pour ses vertus aphrodisiaques).
