Killegy Church and Graveyard date back centuries and can be seen as a microcosm of the history of Muckross itself.
But first - how to get there!
Marked parking waypoint is at the Blue Pool gallery, which has space for a few cars.
It's not immediately apparent, but there is a public pedestrian right of way up to the graveyard beside one of the estate houses.
Have a look at the top of the house and you'll see "HAH 1879". Walk beside the house, over a stile and head on up to the graveyard itself. Follow the red dotted line.
The graveyard is quiet, historic and rarely visited. The 18th century mortuary chapel in the centre was built on the earlier ruins of a 12th century chapel. It is the resting place of Col. Maurice Hussey, who died in 1714. Make sure to read the inscription inside. Macabre!
Within the grounds is the unmarked grave of Rudolph Eric Raspe (author of "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen"). He died in 1794 while managing the coppermines near Ross Castle and was a rogue and scoundrel. So was Maurice Hussey as history records, I'd imagine they would have been well met.
The large cross commemorates Henry Arthur Herbert (remember HAH from the house?) - one time owner of the Muckross Estate. Quite the epitaph.
To the right of the cross is the resting place of Arthur Rose Vincent who donated Muckross House and surrounds to the Irish State in 1932. What an incredible legacy! The ashes of his son, Billy Vincent, were scattered here in 2013.
Directly in front of the cross is a grey marble gravestone of the Hilliard family. Robert (Bob) Hilliard was an Irish Olympic boxer, a founder of the Trinity College hurling club and he died fighting with the 5th International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War. He is remembered in the Christy Moore song "Viva La Quinta Brigada".
Take your time to walk around and soak up the atmosphere - there is a sense of ages past here. It's striking that, although a graveyard for centuries, the oldest headstone I have been able to find is a 'mere' 200 years old.
To log, answer (via message or email) the question below and either send or log a photo as requested. Go ahead and log your find, any problems I'll flag them.
A. As you enter the graveyard there are two crypts directly in front of you. What is the year on the steel door of the Leahy family vault?
B. Log or send a photo of some aspect of the graveyard (barring the vault door
!)
