Geocache Description:

How would you like to shop every three months – and not have the luxury of popping down to the corner store if you ran out of milk.

Here at Weirs Cove, lighthouse keepers in the early 1900’s live just like that. Food, hardware, fuel for the lighthouse light, even the building materials needed to be transported by steamship, transferred to small boats, landed (weather permitting) then carried up a 90 metre cliff!

In 1907 a flying fox made the work just a little easier. There could still be no replacement of goods until the next steamship arrived. For twenty-four years, almost everything arrived by sea and the ‘fox’. Even visitors were winched up the cliff. Terrain difficulty in this case would be 5+

Storage of food was important. Stone huts were built to store consumables. The stone walls kept the building relatively cool.

An overland service began in 1930. The first truck arrived on a rough track to Cape de Couedic Lighthouse from Rocky River in the mid 1940’s – changing the lives of the lighthouse keeper families, and the landscape forever!

This is an Virtual Cache and has special requirements for logging it.  You cannot log a Found It without responding to the logging requirements set out below.

Only one find claim per Message. Each Geocacher claiming a find must submit an individual response. One team can not lodge a response on behalf of a group of people. This will avoid confusion when matching logs with responses. I am sure everyone will understand.

To answer this virtual cache, please message the Cache Owner with answers to the following questions:

1) Standing at GZ, looking down at the water, what is the predominate man made item you can see.

2) Turn around and look at the remains of the stone building. There are three doors on the end. Why do you think there are three doors? What evidence can you see inside the building to prove this.

3) Happy to see any of your “holiday snaps” of the area. (optional)

Feel free to log your visit, but I will be looking for your answers to the above questions. If they are not received within a reasonable time (one week) I will delete your log.

Note:

• Entry to Flinders Chase National requires a permit, payable at the Flinders Chase National Park Information Centre

• Flinders Chase National Park may be closed on days of extreme fire danger

• Terrain rating of 2 is general. These days, you can drive to within 20 metres of GZ, or hike from the lighthouse on the Weirs Cove Hike – 3k return, 1 hour.

• Roads are bitumen to the lighthouse; however, a small amount of gravel driving is required to Weirs Cove (Information for hire car drivers)

***CONGRATULATIONS TO STEVENKR FOR BEING THE VIRTUAL FIRST TO FIND***
