Geocache Description:

The Perth Mint is Australia's official bullion mint and is wholly owned by the Government of Western Australia.

Established on 20 June 1899, the Perth Mint was originally intended to refine gold from the gold rushes and to mint gold sovereigns and half-sovereigns for the British Empire. The building was designed by George Temple-Poole and it is listed on the State's heritage register.

Along with the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra, which produces coins of the Australian dollar for circulation, the Perth Mint issues coins that are legal tender in Australia. The Mint refines approximately 90 percent of Australia’s gold production. It is also a very popular tourist destination for visitors and locals.

Please check the Mint opening times before attempting. On your way to the Mint, you could follow the #heartofgold Discovery Trail (free app) which takes you through 11 significant sites in the Perth CBD with augmented reality, audio stories, videos, photos and interactive games. The trail starts at Elizabeth Quay and finishes at the Perth Mint, so why not pick up a few caches along the way!

Logging requirements

To log this Virtual as a find, you need to message or email me answers to the following questions and post a picture showing either yourself or your GPS near “The Strike” sculpture in the front courtyard.

1) Name the prospectors represented in “The Strike” sculpture.

2) How many persons are listed on the plaque commemorating the WWI Roll of Honour for the Perth Mint, and how many were killed in action?

3) Optional (the sign is no longer there): What is the provenance of the Mint’s roof tiles?

You do not need to visit the Mint for this Virtual as all the answers can be found on plaques located in the front courtyard, but you need to come during opening times to get inside the courtyard.

I hope that you will enjoy this Virtual and that you will follow up with a visit of the Mint!
