Der Bison lebt ursprünglich in den nordamerikanischen Prärien.
Während der Bestand der Bisons vor der Ankunft der europäischen Siedler in Nordamerika auf rund 30 Millionen Tiere geschätzt wird, ging er bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts aufgrund exzessiver Bejagung dramatisch zurück. Heute wird die Gesamtzahl der wildlebenden Tiere auf mehr als 30.000 Individuen geschätzt.
Bisonkühe und Kälber leben in Herden, die für gewöhnlich um fünfzig Tiere umfassen. Die Bullen leben entweder als Einzelgänger oder in eigenen kleinen Gruppen.
Eine Bisonkuh bringt nach neun Monaten Tragzeit Anfang Mai ein 15–25 kg schweres Kalb auf die Welt. Dieses kann nach nach ein bis zwei Tagen mit der Herde mitziehen. Das Muttertier bewacht das Kalb und verteidigt es erbittert gegen alle Feinde. Bisonbullen beteiligen sich nicht an der Aufzucht der Kälber.
Die Nahrung der Bisons besteht fast ausschließlich aus Gräsern und Kräutern.
Bisons haben für gewöhnlich eine Lebenserwartung von zwanzig Jahren. In Zoos kann auch ein Höchstalter von vierzig Jahren erreicht werden.

The bison originates from the north-american prairie.
Their population was estimated at around 30 million before the arrival of european settlers in North America. However due to excessive hunting until the end of 19. century their numbers have reduced drastically. Today the amount of feral bisons is estimated at around 30 000.
The female bison and their calves typically live in herds of about 50. The male bison live as loners or in their own small groups.
A female bison has a gestation period of nine months and gives birth to a calf weighing 15-25 kg around mai. The calf is able to join the herd after one to two days. The bison mother protects its calf fiercly against any possible enemy. The male bisons don’t play a part in the upbringing of the calves.
A bison’s diet consists mostly only of grass and herbs.
Bisons have a live expectancy of about 20 years. In zoos they can even live up to 40 years.
