Le monument de Montsec - Virtual Rewards 2.0 Virtual Cache

Du 12 septembre au 16 septembre 1918, la bataille de Saint-Mihiel est déclenchée. L'offensive est menée par le 5 ème corps US par l'ouest du Saillant, soutenu par le 1 er et 4 ème Corps US progressant par le Sud-Est vers Thiaucourt et Montsec. Enfin, le 2ème Corps d'Armée Colonial Français attaque le secteur de Saint-Mihiel. Les pertes côté Alliée est de 7 000 hommes. A noter que 13 200 Allemands sont faits prisonniers. Le Saillant de Saint-Mihiel est libéré.

Le monument de Montsec a été édifié en 1932 pour commémorer les batailles successives menées par l'armée américaine lors de la première guerre mondiale. Le mémorial est situé sur la colline de Montsec dominant la plaine de la Woëvre. Elle est constituée d'une rotonde à colonnade de style néoclassique.

A l'intérieur, vous pouvez observer les noms des troupes américaines ayant combattues dans la région. Une table d'orientation en bronze met en évidence la position des villages et la localisation des combats du Saillant de Saint-Mihiel.

Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, le mémorial sera légèrement abîmé par les américains afin d'avoir délogés les allemands. Ces derniers considéraient ce site comme un poste d'observation et de surveillance. Le mémorial est géré et entretenu par l'agence " American Battle Monuments Commission " (ABMC).

From September 12 to September 16, 1918, the Battle of Saint-Mihiel was launched. The offensive was led by the 5th US Corps from the west of the Salient, supported by the 1st and 4th US Corps advancing from the southeast towards Thiaucourt and Montsec. Finally, the 2nd French Colonial Army Corps attacked the Saint-Mihiel sector. The Allied side's losses were 7,000 men. It should be noted that 13,200 Germans were taken prisoner. The Montsec Monument was built in 1932 to commemorate the successive battles fought by the American army during the First World War. The memorial is located on Montsec hill overlooking the Woëvre plain.It consists of a neoclassical colonnaded rotunda.

Inside, you can see the names of American troops who fought in the area. A bronze orientation table highlights the position of the villages and the location of the fighting in the Saint-Mihiel Salient.

During the Second World War, the memorial was slightly damaged by the Americans in order to have dislodged the Germans. The latter considered this site as an observation and monitoring post. The memorial is managed and maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC).
