Geocache Description:

Gellatly Bay and the CNR Wharf are a popular walking location in West Kelowna. This virtual will require you to walk or roll from the CNR Wharf along the Gellatly Recreation Corridor to Willow Beach. Parking is difficult in the summer, but you can park on Angus Drive and walk down if there is no spots along Gellatly Road.

CNR Wharf

This wharf was built to accomodate steamships that carried both people and goods, in particular orchard goods, from Westbank. Some destinations were Penticton, Peachland, Kelowna, Carr's Landing, and Vernon. These routes were eventaully replaced by Highway 97.

The CNR wharf today provides a beautiful view in all seasons, with swimming and ziplining in the summer. Although no steamships are active on Okanagan Lake today, there are still discussions about passenger ferries that would follow the old routes.

Question 1: At the end of the CNR wharf on the overhead structure is a date stamped in metal. What is the date?

Question 2: What year was the original wharf used until?

Question 3: What happened to the Gellatly Wharf in 1920?

Gellatly Bay

This recreational trail is part of the Trail 2000 concept that identified a continuous trail from Kelowna to Peachland. Today, this trail is segmented and incompleted. The Gellatly Recreation Corridor is one well-used segment. Other segments include Peachland's Centennial Way, the Big Sagebrush trail in Goats Peak Regional Park, and the Waterfront and Sunnyside trails in Kalamoir Regional Park.

The portion between Willow Beach and the CNR Wharf is a wide gravel or asphalt trail with great views of Gellatly Bay.

Question 4: What railway company started construction of the CNR Wharf in 1927?

Question 5: What are two historic landings in this area for steamships?

Question 6: Out of the three steamships featured on the signs, which one had five decks?

Question 7: Out of the three steamships featured on the signs, which one was the oldest?
