Lizzie the Elephant
In World War I, Lizzie was a 'war elephant' in Sheffield. She was used to haul machinery, ammunition and other materials to and from the Steel City's factories. In 2016, Sheffield marked her 100th anniversary by displaying 58 elephant sculptures throughout the city. Each fibreglass sculpture was distinctly decorated, many of which had Sheffield-themed designs. After being displayed for a few weeks, they were auctioned off to raise money for children’s charity. One of them now lives in the Winter Gardens...
Sheffield Winter Gardens
The Sheffield Winter Gardens is one of the largest temperate glasshouses in the UK, contains over 2500 plants and stands 22 metres high! It was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003.
Your Tasks
The coordinates take to to one of the entrances of the Winter Gardens. Please go inside and look for the elephant (hint: it's quite large!). To claim a find, send the answers to questions 1-3 to me via the message centre and upload a photo to your log as described in 4. Do not put the answers in your log!
- Describe the elephant's colours and pattern
- What two words are written just above its right rear foot? (it's not Jamie Cook!)
- Walk around the bedding to see a sculptures of snakes, and what large wild animal?
- Important to prove you were there personally: upload a photo of you OR show something with your geocaching username clearly shown on it (paper/screen)
- The photo must be clearly somewhere within the Winter Gardens, but not to give away the answer to the above questions. Photos from outside the Winter Gardens are not acceptable (see opening times below).
- Group photos are permitted as long as everyone is accounted for.
- A found-it log can be submitted without a photo so long as a valid photo is uploaded within 48 hours otherwise your log may be deleted.
If you happen to have any photos of any of the other elephants from 2016, feel free to upload!
