Pennsylvania and Delaware have a lot of history from a Quaker named William Penn. Pennsylvania means Penn's woodland and the land was given to Penn by England's King Charles II in 1681. Delaware used to be the lower three counties of Pennsylvania and on June 15, 1776 the lower three counties separated from Pennsylvania to form the state of Delaware. There is a place in Philadelphia called Penn's Landing, but William Penn actually first set foot in the Americas in New Castle on October 27, 1682. There is also a monument for Penn's landing in what is now Chester, but he didn't set foot there until October 28 or 29, 1682, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Penn_Landing_Site. There are several references to Penn in New Castle, as well as, the Philadelphia area. In Delaware his name is best known for the name of the largest high school in the state.
The posted coordinates will take you to a statue of William Penn by Charles Parks. In the statue Penn is holding the symbolic gifts given to him during the the Livery of Seizen ceremony. While at the statue take a moment to read the nearby historic sign about the New Castle Common. There are additional coordinates for a historic sign commemorating Penn's landing in New Castle.
