For over 50 years, Cairns has been indelibly linked with Istiompax Indica, the Black Marlin. One of the largest fish in the ocean, it grows up to 4.65m in length, can weight up to 750kg and has a maximum speed clocked at 36kph.
Since the first in 1968, more than 50,000 marlin have been tagged off Cairns, with the region becoming one of the world's most famous locations for this contentious sport. However, with this development has come most of the world's knowledge about this illusive, highly migratory species.
This life-sized replica of the first Australian 1000-lb marlin caught, joins the 'Big Fish' at Earlville, Marlin Marina, the Cairns Marlins basketball team, the naming of the Marlin Coast & a host of local businesses in honouring this giant of the seas.
To log this cache you must visit the given coordinates and submit a photo of yourself or team identifier with the big fish. Logs without an appropriate photo will be removed. Congratulations to Fullboar on the FTF!
