Geocache Description:

Seaman’s Hut Virtual Cache

S 36°27.010 E 148°16.967

Seaman's Hut is an Alpine Hut and Memorial located in New South Wales, Australia. This hut was erected in 1929 following the deaths of two skiers, W. Laurie Seaman and Evan Hayes who perished in a blizzard when they were separated from their group in 1928. The site of Seaman’s Hut located on Etheridge Ridge was chosen by W. H. Seaman and was built using money donated by the Seaman family. Seaman’s Hut was officially opened by Mr F. Chaffey and a small group, on a Friday 17 May 1929. The intention was to provide shelter to future users of the park who might need emergency shelter in order to prevent recurrence of a similar tragedy.

Seaman's hut is a 7m x3m constructed from Granite Stones. The hut two rooms (one containing a Pot Belly Stove), a foyer for firewood storage and a planked wood floor. Seaman’s Hut was renovated in 1938 due to fire. The Hut is well-stocked with firewood and also holds emergency supplies of dried food. The food supplies are stocked by goodwill of hikers and are not maintained officially by the National Parks.

The walk starts from Charlotte Pass and follows the Old Kosciuszko Road through the mountains to Seaman’s Hut, crossing the famous Snowy River along the way. Seaman’s Hut is a great place to enjoy lunch and is openly available for day use (and for emergency use at night). Most of this walk gives excellent grandstand views across the valley and down the Snowy River. The walk follows a well-defined management trail (that was once a public road) with signposts along the way.
