Geocache Description:

!Péscame algo en el Mercado Central!

Something fishy at the Central Market...

Horario de atención: Lunes a Domingo, 8:00 a 17:00 horas

Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Santiago's Central Market, mainly designated to selling fish and seafood, is located in the historic center of the city, situated in a patrimonial edifice, built between 1869 and 1872, which has been declared a Historic Monument of Chile for its architectural value.
Designed in neoclassical style, the two-story building with its square footprint is predominantly defined by its intricate iron roof structure, cast in Glasgow (Scotland), filtering the intense sunlight while at the same time allowing for ventilation. Its metal frame, covering an interior plaza with a beautiful centrical fountain, is surrounded by a perimeter made from clay brick masonry. The entire venue is decorated with wrought-iron floral ornaments located on the gates and the pillars and arches that support the vaulted ceiling. The building has been modified several times throughout its history (building a second brick perimeter, installing electrical light in 1900, carrying out extensions and restorations).
Currently, the Central Market of Santiago is one of the most visited places both by locals as well as tourists. With more than one hundred stands, it is a place known for the fresh products offered by dozens of fish and seafood stalls and also for its gastronomic offer, which has preserved traditional recipes and dishes as part of the Chilean culinary heritage. National Geographic magazine distinguished it as the "World's 5th Best Food Market" in 2012.
The market is the ideal location to get in touch with the true culinary character of Santiago and to learn about the primary flavors of the national cuisine. It houses restaurants of excellent reputation, established here many years ago. Its popular specialties include typical dishes based on fish and shellfish such as conger eel, spider crab, el mariscal, la paila marina, el pastel de jaiba and various versions of fried fish.
So we invite you to walk the bustling aisles of the market in order to encounter all those strange fishy critters face to face. We hope you don't get scared by how weird some of these sea creatures look close up before being dropped into a cooking-pot. Your task is to catch us something fishy among the wide range of eel, hake, corvina, albacore, sole, mackerel, salmon, octopus, spider crab, shrimp, squid, clams, mussels, oysters, abalone, sea urchins, piure, picorocos among others and show your most curious or grotesque catch in a personalized photo.
