Geocache Description:

Port St Francis

Port St Francis

Port St Francis, one of a few privately owned harbours in South Africa, is a mere hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth. The Port, together with the beautiful Cape St Francis, is part of St Francis Bay in the Kouga region. Port St Francis, a working harbour is home to a large fleet of squid, hake and pilchard vessels as well as charter boats, deep sea fishing boats and yachts from all over the world. The launching of boats, loading and offloading of vessels, crew fixing large fishing nets and fishermen coming back with their daily catches are fascinating to visitors and holiday makers. This all contributes to the unique vibe of Port St Francis.  The marine life in and around the harbour includes whales, dolphins, seals, otters and marine birds. During the months June to November southern right whales visit the bay, and close encounters can be booked from the only boat based licence holder in the Kouga. The establishment of Port St Francis can directly be attributed to the growth of the chokka or squid industry. When this “white Gold” was discovered in the early 1980’s, the need for a harbour became evident. Port St Francis was officially opened on 10 December 1996.

Please observe 3 very simple, yet potentialy life saving rules

Rule 1. No vehicles allowed on harbour wall.

Rule 2. DO NOT walk on the highest part of the harbour wall. It is slippery and dangerous to walk on.

Rule 3. If the wall seems safe and easy to walk on, see rule 2.
