Passé une arche porte, on découvre subitement un îlot ensoleillé agrémenté d’une fine fontaine. Cette placette Saint-Ravy a été créée en 1860, grâce à la démolition d’un immeuble délabré. Sur la façade, on voit une fenêtre ogivale trilobée, rare vestige du XIIIe siècle gothique, qui appartient à l’ancien palais des rois d’Aragon et de Majorque: seigneurs de Montpellier de 1204 à 1349. C’est dans cet hôtel, dit de Jacquet, que Jacques III d’Aragon a tué son page, coupable d’avoir taché son habit en lui versant du vin. Grave erreur : le père du page, Arnaud de Roquefeuil, s’est alors joint aux ennemis de Jacques III... qui a fini ruiné, contraint de vendre Montpellier au roi de France !
C’est quoi, cette fresque colorée, placée sous la fenêtre gothique de la place Saint-Ravy ? Un autre témoignage du Moyen Âge ? Pas du tout. Composée de carreaux de faïence, cette fresque a été réalisée en 1905 par un certain Raoul Bussy. Cette année-là, à cet endroit, s’installe la Schola Cantorum de Montpellier. Cette école de chant religieux a été créée par le compositeur Charles Bordes, qui a fait de même à Paris et Avignon.
