S.S Rotterdam - Nederlandse versie
Geschiedenis van het schip:
Welkom op de SS Rotterdam, we hebben deze locatie gekozen voor de virtual cache omdat de SS Rotterdam een icoon is voor Rotterdam als havenstad. De SS Rotterdam heeft een lange en bewogen geschiedenis die begon in Rotterdam en na veel omzwervingen ook weer eindigde in Rotterdam waar ze nu permanent ligt afgemeerd. In 1955 gaf de Holland Amerika Lijn (HAL) de opdracht tot de bouw van de SS (staat voor Stoom Schip) Rotterdam. De RDM begon met de bouw van dit schip dat vanaf 1959 ingezet zou worden als lijndienst tussen Rotterdam en New York. De lijndiensten waren echter op hun retour vanwege het opkomende vliegverkeer dus werd de SS Rotterdam ook ingezet als cruiseschip. In 1968 werd de SS Rotterdam compleet verbouwd door de RDM tot cruiseschip waarna ze jaren dienst deed, voornamelijk in Noord Amerika totdat de HAL in 1997 geen mogelijkheid zag tot exploitatie van het gedateerde schip. Het schip werd verkocht aan een andere rederij die in het jaar 2000 failliet ging.
Daarna begon een traject om de SS Rotterdam te behouden, uiteindelijk kocht de RDM het schip in 2003 met geld van de gemeente Rotterdam. Dit resulteerde in een flinke soap, het schip lag in Gibraltar en werd verplaatst naar Cádiz voor onderhoud. Daarna ging het voor verder onderhoud naar het Poolse Gdańsk. Vanwege de aangetroffen asbest werd het onderhoud gestopt en werd het schip afgemeerd aan de Willemshaven in Rotterdam. Daar werd het asbest verwijderd en werd het schip grondig verbouwd. Daarnaast waren er allerlei financiele schandalen waardoor de eigenaar (woningcorporatie Woonbron) voor miljoenen het schip in ging. Op 4 augustus 2008 kwam de SS Rotterdam aan op haar huidige locatie, het Derde Katendrechtse Hoofd. Op 15 februari 2010 was de opening voor het publiek nadat opnieuw aanpassingen en verbouwingen waren gedaan. In 2012 werd het schip verkocht aan een hotel groep waardoor een gedeelte van het schip hotel en conferentie centrum werd.
Huidige staat:
Zoals gezegd, het schip is nu een hotel en conferentie centrum. Maar een gedeelte van het schip is 24 uur per dag open voor het publiek. het schip is goed bereikbaar met het OV, auto en zelfs met de watertaxi. Daarnaast is er diverse horeca aan boord waar je je kunt vermaken. Het schip is in oude glorie hersteld en een gedeelte is vrij toegankelijk te bewonderen.
Je taak:
Om deze virtual te mogen loggen zul je het volgende moeten doen:
- Ga aan boord van het schip (via de loopbruggen of kom aan met de watertaxi). Bij de trappen op iedere verdieping vindt je een informatiebord zodat je kunt zien welke dekken er zijn en waar je je bevindt.
- Aan boord moet je de volgende opdrachten voltooien:
- Ga naar het "B DECK (B)" en zoek daar het wapen van de gemeente Rotterdam. Door hoeveel vogels is dit wapen omgeven? Dit is A.
- Ga naar het "B DECK (B)" en zoek daar de plaquette van Koningin Juliana. Door hoeveel leeuwen is deze plaquette omgeven? Dit is B.
- Ga naar nu naar het "MAIN DECK (M)" en ga de hotel receptie binnen. Daar hangt een hele grote kaart aan de muur. Onder de kaart staat een naam in grote letters beginnende met een R. Dit is NAAM.

- Ga naar nu naar het "PROMENADE DECK (P)" en ga naar het "Lido Terrace". Je komt dan buiten op het achterdek, maak hier een foto van jezelf op het achterdek als bewijs dat je op het schip was. Je hoeft uiteraard niet herkenbaar in beeld. Hieronder vindt je de foto van ons bezoek aan het schip:

Ships history:
Welcome on the SS Rotterdam, we have chosen this place for our virtual cache because the ship is iconic for the maritime history of Rotterdam. The ship itself has a long history which started in Rotterdam and after several voyages also ended in Rotterdam. She is now permanently located in Rotterdam. In the year 1955 the Holland Amerika Lijn (HAL) ordered the build of the SS (stands for Steam Ship) Rotterdam. She was build at the RDM dockyards and in 1959 she began her duties on a regular service between Rotterdam and New York. Since airplane transportation was on a rise the need for ships decreased so the ship was also used as cruise ship. In 1968 she was completely converted into a cruise ship and she was in service for several years mainly in North America. In 1997 she was considered to be outdated and was sold to an other company, this company went bankrupt in 2000.
After her regular usage the RDM bought the ship and and tried to convert the ship so she could be used for other purposes. The ship was transported from Gibraltar to Cádiz for maintanance purposes. And moved again towards Gdańsk for further renovation, there they found asbestos so all work was stopped. She was moved again but this time to the Willemshaven in Rotterdam where she was completely stripped and renovated. As a consequence a lot of money was lost here. On August 4th 2008 the SS Rotterdam was located on its present location and on February 10th she was opened for the public again. In 2010 the ship was sold and a and converted into a hotel and conference center.
Current state:
The ship is now a hotel and conference center, large parts of the ship are open 24 hours a day for public. You can get to the ship by public transport, car and even use the watertaxi. On board there are a bar and restaurant in which you can enjoy yourself. Most of the ship is decorated in the original style and some parts are open for everyone.
Your task:
To claim this virtual cache you need to do the following:
- Enter the ship via one of the walkways or use the watertaxi. Near the staircase on every floor you will find an informationpanel which gives you an overview of the decks and tells you at which deck you currently are.
- When you have boarded the ship you need to fulfil the following tasks:
- Go to "B DECK (B)" and find the coat of arms of the city of Rotterdam. By how many birds is the coat of arms surrounded? The amount of birds is called A.
- Go to "B DECK (B)" and find the plaque of Queen Juliana. By how many lions is the plaque surrounded? The amount of lions is called B.
- Now go to "MAIN DECK (M)" and enter the hotel reception. There you will find a big map hanging on the wall. On the bottum there is a name listed which starts with R. This will be called NAME.
Now sent an email to NAMEAB@gmail.com and put the teamname in subject.
Example: A=4, B=6, NAME=Rotterdam and team name=Rotterdam4ever; sent an email to Rotterdam46@gmail.com using subject: Rotterdam4ever.
If your answer is correct you will get an instant reply.
- Now go the "PROMENADE DECK (P)" and to the "Lido Terrace". Your are now entering the after deck on which you can admire the views. Here you should take a picture of yourself on the after deck as a proof you have visited the ship. There is no need to be recognizable. Below you will find a picture of our visit of the ship
