Two families are of great importance in the history of the village: The Cardona family, who were the marquises of Guadalest, and the Orduña family, who were very close to the former.
Several earthquakes destroyed the castles in the XVII and XVIII centuries. In the XX century El Castell de Guadalest underwent some important changes, such as the construction of a reservoir that was started in 1953 and completed in 1971.
Soon after, tourism started taking off and in 1974 it was declared a Historical Artistic Site and after it was named a historical heritage site.
In 2015, the village became part of the association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain and in 2016, it became part of the Most Beautiful Villages in the World.
Located on the crest of a hillock at 587m above sea level, El Castell de Guadalest houses overlook an extensive valley bordered by the sierras of Xortá and Serrella to the north and the sierra Aitana to the south. This municipality enjoys a Mediterranean type climate.
The rugged terrain has pines and shrubbery on higher ground, with terraced slopes circling down to the valley, on which citrus, olive, carob and almond trees grow, providing a note of colour to the scenery at blossoming time.
There are three beautiful walks in the area: around the reservoir walking up to the summit of Xortá mountain and walking up to another village called Castell de Castells.
