Spikersuppa har sin historie tilbake til 1956, da Christiania Spikerverk forærte Oslo Kommune en gave i å pusse opp hele området. En av disse gavene var en dam, som raskt fikk navnet Spikersuppa på folkemunne. Men dens egentlige navn er Hjortedammen, etter Arne Vigelands skulptur av to hjorter midt på "Hjortøya". I 1994 fikk Spikersuppa sitt første kunstisanlegg, etter at Strøksforeningen Studenterlunden engasjerte Narvesen i forbindelse med OL på Lillehammer. Kunstisbanen ble kalt "Narvisen". Etter en del år ble anlegget overtatt av Oslo kommune, og i 2013 ble anlegget igjen oppgradert. Om vinteren er det skøytebane i Spikersuppa. Det er gratis å gå på skøyter der, og skøyter kan leies i paviljongen ved siden av.

The history of this pond runs back to 1956, when Christiania Spikerverk (a nail manufactoring company) gave Oslo city a gift of redecorating the entire area. One of the gifts were a pond, that quickly was nicknamed Spikersuppa (The Nail Soup). However, the real name of the pond was Hjortedammen (The Deer Pond), after the artist Arne Vigelands sculpture of two deer on the little island in the pond. In the winter, the pond is a very popular ice scating court.
