Sarpefossen, den gang het den Sarpr, var direkte årsak til at Norges konge Olav Haraldsson i 1016 grunnla landets nye hovedstad Borg. Han seilte opp Glomma, men kunne ikke passere den mektige fossen med alle langskipene. Det var også fossen som ga byen dens nye navn, den gang Borg ble byttet ut med Sarpsborg.
