Aurora Borealis 10-10-2024
Coombe Hill is a very popular destination due to its location and excellent views of the Aylesbury Vale, and surrounding Counties. It also has a magnificent monument placed to remember the fallen men from Buckinghamshire during the Second Boer War.
Another feature it did have until it was vandalized and completely destroyed in October 2018, was a triangulation pillar at GZ. This was somewhat different to the standard ones, as it had a toposcope built over the top of it, with slots machined, so theodolites could still be mounted onto the pillar below. The toposcope pointed the directions to notable landmarks also showing the approximate distances. One very prominent set of landmarks shown on the toposcope were the Calvert Chimneys, which I regularly saw working in action from my bedroom window 30+ years ago. Like the toposcope, these have long since gone, so are now in keeping with this cache type, i.e. virtual.
To claim a find, all you need to do is take a picture at or near to GZ to document your visit, then post it with your log, and by way of a little easy research find out who or what owned the Calvert Chimneys, and estimate how far away from GZ they were, then email or message me with your answer. You may log your find at the time of your visit, and send me the answers whenever convenient.
