Geocache Description:

We have some pretty awesome Aussies, who’ve done some pretty special things – enough to be awarded the Australian of the Year. This virtual cache is a fun way for you to connect with these great Aussies.

Two Connection Requirements

1. Story Connection

Name two AOTYs (or more if you want) who you connect to in different ways. Describe what the connect is - perhaps it could be: personally knowing them, meeting them, living near them, having the same name or birthday as them, playing the same sport or pursuing the same vocation, or just admiring them for who they are. Short log or long log - I'm sure there's some interesting connections with geocachers. Some of my connections:

  • I served in East Timor with General Sir Peter Cosgrove. Whilst I was based at the Dili heliport, I routinely travelled to his headquarters in town. I recall watching the world celebrate the new millennium (we even got to have a few beers!!).
  • I attended the 2000 Olympics. Saw some amazing races. Watched Cathy Freeman win her semi final. Afterwards, I recall being part of an amazing rendition of Waltzing Matilda outside Circular Quay. Goose bumps.
  • Like Allan Border, I was a left-handed cricketer (unlike Allan Border, I wasn't very good).
  • I admire the work Fred Hollows did to restore eyesight for thousands. I have supported the Fred Hollows foundation for many years.

2. Photo Connection

Take a photo next to the plaque of an AOTY who you have talked about. Add to your log. I chose a shot next to the plaque for Fred Hollows - interestingly, that year Cathy Freeman was Young Australian of the Year (8 years later she won the main award).

Logging

Happy for you to log straightaway - but please follow the simple rules: describe your connection with two (or more) AOTYs; and take a photo next to one of their plaques. Enjoy.
