'L'envol '
a bronze sculpture by the artist Charlotte Engels, which stood from 1979 to 2003 near the old airport building "Findel". In 2010 it has been replaced next to the new terminal.
History:
The sculpture is a stylised synthesis of a bird and an aeroplane, pointing towards the sky. Made of bronze, it stands 3.5 metres tall and weighs two tonnes. Commissioned in 1977 by the Ministry of Transport, it was created by the sculptor Charlotte Engels. It cost 5.9 million Luxembourgish francs (approximately 148,000 euros). In April 1979, the sculpture was inaugurated in a ceremony at its location at Findel Airport.
However, due to construction work for the new terminal, it was removed in 2003. On 16 March 2010, the newspaper Tageblatt reported that the sculpture had been found toppled over among scrap metal and an oil drum on airport grounds near Birelerhaff. In response to the article, Transport Minister Claude Wiseler stated that the sculpture would be stored indoors and later reinstalled in front of the 'new' terminal.
In June 2010, the sculpture was taken to a specialised workshop near Stuttgart, where it was repaired and coated with a 'natural bronze-brown' patina. The restoration cost âŹ16,600. On 25 November 2010, the sculpture was reinstalled in front of the 'new' terminal in the presence of the Minister for Public Works, Claude Wiseler.
