백마고지 전적비

철원군 북방에 있는 백마고지는 6.25동란 당시 피린내나는 격전지였다. 1952년 10월 6일, 중공군의 대공세에 의해 10일 간이나 계속된 백마고지 전투는 약30만 발의 포탄이 이 지역에서 사용되었으며, 고지의 주인도 24번 이나 바뀌었다.

이 전투에서 1만4천 여명의 사상자를 낸중공군 2개 사단이 완전히 와해 되었으며, 국군제 9사단은 백마지전투의 대승을 계기로 백마사단이라고 명명되었다.

격렬했던 전투 끝에 남은 흙 먼지와 시체가 뒤섞여 악취가 산을 뒤덮을 정도였고,서로의 포격에 의해 고지의 본래의 모습을 잃어버렸는 데 마치 백마옆으로 누워있는 형상이라 하여 백마고지로 불리게 되었다.

당시 이 백마고지 사수를 위해 용감하게 싸운 국군제 9사단 장병의 넋을 추모하기 위해 이곳에 백마고지 전투 전적비기 건립되었다.

이비에는 당시전투의 격렬함고 많은 사람이 조국의 수호신으로 산화했음을 일려주는 비문이 새겨져있다.

백마고지 언덕 전투

백마고지는 미국 제 9 군단에 의해 통제 된 지역의 부분 인 약 3.2km (2 마일) 동안 북서 - 남동 방향으로 확장 된 395m (1,296ft)의 숲이 우거진 산의 볏이었다. 철원에 대한 서쪽 접근법을 지배하면서 골짜기 너머로 좋은 명령을 가진 중요한 전초 기지로 간주되었다. 언덕이 사라지면 제 9 군단은 철원 지역의 요꼬 촌 고지 남쪽으로 철수하게되고 제 9 군단은 철원 길을 사용하지 못하게되고 전체 지역을 적의 공격과 침투로 개방하게된다. 10일간의 전투에서 언덕은 반복적 인 공격과 반격으로 24시간 동안 손을 바꿀 것입니다.

백마고지 전투지 - 웨이 포인트 2

1952년 10월 국군 제9사단이 중공군 제38군과 6.25전쟁 시기가장 티열하게 고지 쟁탈전을 전개하였던 곳이다.

1952년 10웧 6일 철원 서북방 395고지(효성산 남단)에 주둔하고 있던 국군 제9사단은 중공군 제38군 3개 사단의 공격을 받았다. 이때부터 10월 15일까지 열흘간 395고지를 사이에 두고 12차례 전투가 반복되면서 여러 차례 주인이 바뀌었지만, UN 군의 지원을 받응 국군 제9사단응 마침내 고지를 장악하였다.

전투 광정에서 국군 제9사단응 총 3천 4백여 명의 사상자가 발생하였고, 중공군도 1만 4천여 명이 죽거나 다치고 포로가 되었다. 극심한 공중 폭격과 포격으로 민둥산이 되둥산이 되어버린 모습이마치 백마가 누워 있는 것처럼 보였기 때문에 이후부터 395고지일대를 백마고지라 부르게 되었다.

노동당 건물 - 관심 장소

화이트 호스 힐 기념관에서 10 분 거리에 위치한 노동당 건물은 현대 문화 유산 등록 문화재입니다.

* NOTE * 캐시를 기록하기 위해 여기를 방문 할 필요는 없지만이 지역을 둘러싼 역사는이 지역이 지질 학적으로나 정치적으로 중요한 이유에 대한 직접적인 상관 관계가 있습니다

한국 전쟁 이전에 공산당 정치를 강화하고 국민을 통제하기 위해 사용 된 북한 노동당 철원 청사. 5 년 동안 북한은 이 지역을 지배하고 사람들을 고문하고 살해하는 등의 수많은 잔인한 행위를 저질렀습니다. 그 건물은 사람들이 '그곳에 들어간 사람은 아무데도 나오지 않는다'고 말하곤했다. 건물 뒷쪽에는 야만적 행위에 사용 된 총알 껍질과 철선이 발견되었다.

전쟁의 상처는 여전히 벽에 오늘까지 볼 수 있습니다.

White Horse Hill

Located to the Northwest Cheorwon, ROK, this battle is well known as the bloodiest battle in the history of the Korean War.

The battle itself lasted for 10 days. The number of bombing shells used against the Chinese were numbered at 14,000 and two divisions of their army were disintegrated. The Ninth Division of the South Korean Army was named Beakma (White Horse) Division because of this great victory. At the time, the air was filled with the smell of decaying corpses and the mountain lost its original form due to the heavy bombardment.

The name White Horse Hill came from the shape of the mountain, which resembles a horse lying down, when taken with aerial photographs. This monument was constructed in memory of soldiers from the Ninth Division who perished bravely, protecting the freedom and lives of the Korean people.

The Battle of White Horse Hill

Baengma-goji or White Horse was the crest of a 395 meter (1,296 ft) forested hill mass that extended in a northwest-to-southeast direction for about 3.2 km (2 miles), part of the area controlled by the U.S. 9th Corps, and considered an important outpost with a good command over the valley, dominating the western approaches to Cheorwon. Loss of the hill would force 9th Corps to withdraw to the high ground south of Yokkok-chon in the Cheorwon area, denying the 9th Corps use of the Cheorwon road and would open up the entire area to enemy attack and penetration. During ten days of battle, the hill would change hands 24 times after repeated attacks and counterattacks for its possession.

The Site of the White Horse Hill Battle - Waypoint 2

This is the place where, in October 1952, the 9th Division of the National armed forces had an extremely fierce battle for the hill against the 38th Chinese communist army during the Korean War.

On October 6th, 1952, the 9th Division, which was stationed on the 395 meter hill located here, just Northwest of Cheorwon (the southern end of Mount Hyoseong), was attacked by three divisions of of the 38th Chinese communist army. Over the course of the next 10 days, until October 15th, there were 12 engagements in which the hill changed hands several times. In the end, the 9th Division, supoorted by UN forces, captured the hill. The UN flag can still be seen from here.

As a result of the battle, the 9th Division recorded casualties of more thatn 3,400 men and the Chinese army suffered more than 14,000 killed, injured, or captured. As the appearence of the hill changed, due to heavy air bombardments and artillery fire, it took the name Bald Hill, until they gave it its name as we know it today as White Horse Hill.

Labor Party Building - Point of Interest

Located 10 minutes from White Horse Hill Memorial, is the Labor Party Building, a Registered Cultural Asset of Modern Cultural Heritages.

*NOTE* visiting here is NOT required to log the virtual, but the history surrounding the 2 areas has direct correlation as to why this region was so important, both geopraphically and politically.

This is the North Korean Labor Party Cheorwon Office Building that was used to strengthen communist politics and to control people before the Korean War. For 5 years, North Korea ruled this area, committing numerous brutal acts such as torturing and killing people. The building was so notorious that people used to say, 'anyone who goes in there, never comes out intact." At the back of the building, bullet shells and iron wires have been found that were used for their campaigns of brutality.

The scars of war can still be seen on the walls to this day.

How to log this virtual cache

Please follow the example pictures. Do not substitute different areas or I will delete your logs, without warning. Going at night is NOT recommended, just as the attribute says. The area is not well lit due to its proximity to the border, so your photos will not satisfy the requirements. *Additional photos are optional and encouraged, but only the 2 taken from the designated waypoints will count towards logging the cache.

1) Take a photo of yourself at waypoint 1 (Monuments) which includes your head, with the Korean flag and Stone monuments VISIBLE in the background.

2) Take a photo of yourself at waypoint 2 (Battle Site) which includes your head, with White Horse Hill VISIBLE in the background. Photos of the map and information boards do not count towards logging requirements.

Photos should be uploaded at the time of the find log.

Photos MUST include part of your head, but you do not need to have your face visible. No fingers, hands, feet, toes or any other body parts. Any log that does not meet the requirements WILL be deleted without notice. No excuses! Do not log a find without attaching an image. Logs without attached photos WILL be deleted without notice.

Lastly, please be respectful while visiting this memorial. Also, as it is close to the DMZ, a military presence is still active, but visitors are perfectly safe and welcome.
