Welcome to Oscarsborg fortress
Oscarsborg is situated on Kaholmene island, in the Oslofjord. This is at the narrowest point of the fjord, which made the fortress well placed to protect the capital. The fortress is most famous for the it's role in defending the country during the german attack on Norway on April 9th, 1940. It was from here the torpedoes and grenades were fired, that sunk the german heavy cruiser "Blücher". This gave the King of Norway (Haakon VII) and the government the time they needed to flee. This meant that the King could continue to be a leader for his people, and was an important symbol of unity for the norwegian resistance.
At the coordinates given for task 1, you'll be standing next to the main battery of cannons, at cannon number 3. The three main cannons were named "Moses", "Aron" and "Josva" (Joshua). "Moses" got its name because it once fell in the water and had to be retrieved, during loading at the docks in Kristiania (Oslo).
Colonel Birger Eriksen was the commander at the fortress during the fighting on April 9th. 1940. He received word that a foreign war ship was approaching the capital, and did not stop, despite warning shots. His instructions were to commence bombardment with his heavy cannons. Eriksen followed the instructions, and fired on the german cruiser with no further warnings. He was awarded with The War Cross with Sword for his actions during the war. (the highest ranking Norwegian gallantry decoration.)
