Geocache Description:

Description changed in February 2022.

Come and explore the historic side of beautiful Queenstown!

(Please note: this is a virtual cache. That means that there is no physical container hidden here. Instead, please answer the questions below to be able to log a find on this cache!)
We'll also delete DNF logs as it's impossible to DNF a cache like this one!

This virtual cache is located nearby to Frankton’s iconic ‘two bridges’ – when approaching them from the Frankton side you’ll see the old bridge on the right – it’s hard to believe that hundreds of cars crossed this one-way bridge each day… and on the left is the newer bridge that was built from December 2015 until May 2018 when it was completed.

Now even more cars can cross this two-way bridge each day, plus bikers and walkers can use the footpath to cross at any time on both the old and new bridges.

It's super useful and very interesting to read and learn about Lake Wakatipu – which is what this virtual is all about.
For a short summary of the lake…

“Lake Wakatipu was formed by glaciers more than 15,000 years ago. But, it wasn't until August 1859 when the lake was first explored by a Scottish surveyor, Donald Hay. He spent several days exploring the lake by raft. Queenstown was once called “Camptown” and was an important town during the gold rush in the 1800s.”

(this information was taken from https://www.southerndiscoveries.co.nz/latest/everything-you-should-know-about-lake-wakatipu/ - a great read if you have a minute or two!)

Now onto this virtual cache’s questions…

In order to be able to log a valid “find” here on the cache page, you’ll need to answer these three simple questions and please forward them to us (via GeoMessages or email – any way you’d like!)

There’s no need to wait for us to respond before you log the cache – we’ll let you know if we need anything else!

To answer the questions, see a turbine monument located at GZ. There is a plaque on it which has all the answers you need.

  1.   When was this turbine salvaged from the river by N.Z. Electricity. Dunedin.?

  2.   What was it first used for in the 1870’s?

  3.   Why did this turbine cease to function in 1926?

Please enjoy your experience here and feel free to contact us at anytime if you have a question or need any help!
