Nils Aas

Nils Aas (1933-2004) var en av Norges mest kjente billedhuggere. Han vokste opp her på Straumen i en familie av fremstående møbelsnekkere, og her i nærmiljøet står en rekke av hans skulpturer (se veipunkter).
Han er mest kjent for sin statue av Haakon VII på 7. juni-plassen i Oslo (bildet over) og Ibsen-statuen utenfor Den Nationale Scene i Bergen (bildet under), men var en usedvanlig allsidig kunstner som mestret en rekke ulike materialer:
Tidlig i karrieren jobbet han en periode som avistegner, og han illustrerte bøker, blant annet Alf Prøysens Alle tiders gullhøne (1959) og Lampedusas Leoparden. Statuen av Haakon VII er utført i leire og gips og støpt i bronse, mens Ibsen-statuen er av granitt. Den 10 tonn tunge veggdekorasjonen Nordisk Lys i Europarådets ministerrådssal i Strasbourg er utført i laminert gran, og han brukte tre i flere av sine arbeider. Aas laget også skulturer i ståltråd og papir.
Inderøy kommunes kommunevåpen er designet av Nils Aas, og han designet flere norske mynter, blant dem 10- og 20-kronemyntene vi bruker i dag.
Ground zero til denne virtuelle cachen er plassert utenfor inngangen til Nils Aas Kunstverksted, som eier og disponerer en fast samling av hans arbeider. Videre finnes en rekke av hans skulpturer i Muustrøparken, som er Inderøy kommunes tusenårssted.

Nils Aas (1933-2004) was one of Norway's most famous sculptors. He grew up here in Straumen in a family of skilled furniture makers, and many of his works are found around here (see waypoints).
He's most renowned for his sculpture of King Haakon VII on 7. juni-plassen (the June 7th Square) in Oslo (photo above) and the Ibsen statue outside Den Nationale Scene (National Theater) in Bergen (photo below), but he was an incredibly versatile artist who mastered a wide range of materials:
Early in his career, he worked as a newspaper illustrator, and he illustrated books, among them Alf Prøysen's Alle tiders gullhøne and the Norwegian translation of Lampedusa's The Leopard. The statue of King Haakon VII was originally made from clay and plaster and then cast in bronze, while his statue of Ibsen in made from Granite. The 10-ton heavy wall decoration Nordisk Lys at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg is made from laminated spruce, and he used wood in many of his works. Aas also made sculpures from steel wire and paper.
Inderøy municipality's coat of arms was designed by Nils Aas, and he designed many Norwegian coins, among them the 10- and 20-kroner coins being used as of today.
Ground zero of this virtual geocache is placed right outside the entrance to Nils Aas Kunstverksted, a gallery which owns and keeps many of his works. You'll also find many of his works in Inderøy municipality's millennium site, the sculpture park Muustrøparken.

To log this cache, you need to take a photo of one of Nils Aas' sculptures here in Straumen and enclose it in your online log. You yourself or a personal belonging must be present in the photo.
I especially encourage you to post a photo in which you interact with a sculpture in one way or another, for example riding the duck by Straumen Bridge or accepting the flowers from the sculpture by Inderøyheimen.
