50 Years- First Man on the Moon Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Grey Wolf and Wild Rice: Thanks to all who attended. It was fun and a great trip down memory lane for those who remember the Apollo 11 mission. I'll have to find another space event to celebrate.

Geocache Description:

20 July 2019, 15:00 - 16:00

It all started with John F. Kennedy's speech at Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas on September 12, 1962 when he stated: "We choose to go to the Moon". Kennedy's goal was realized in July 1969, with the successful Apollo 11 mission.

Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, both American, landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC. (3:17 PM CDT) . Armstrong acknowledged Aldrin's completion of the post landing checklist with "Engine arm is off", before responding to the CAPCOM, Charles Duke, with the words, "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed."

Neil Armstrong's first step onto the lunar surface was broadcast on live TV to a worldwide audience. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface six hours later on July 21 at 02:56:15 UTC. (9:56 pm July 20). He described the event as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.". Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later.

Come join other geocachers to celebrate this historic event at a significant location relating to space travel.

Schedule of Events:

* Event begins 3:00pm CDT

*3:17pm CDT The Apollo Lunar Module Eagle landed. Maybe even repeat: "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed."

*4:00 pm CDT Even is over. Thanks for attending.

If you want to repeat Armstrong's famous words "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.", you'll need to do that from somewhere else, as it would have been a few minutes before 10pm.
