Geocache Description:

21 July 2019, 15:45 - 16:15

On 21 July 1969 at 2:56 UTC, Neil Armstrong became the first man to step on the surface of the moon. We will commemorate the 50th year anniversary of this occasion with a geocaching event.

For us, in North America, this historic event was 20 July at 10:56 PM Eastern Daylight Time. This converts to 3:56 AM British Summer Time. However, almost 4:00 in the morning does not seem like a great time for a geocaching event, so we decided to have it 12 hours later on 21 July.

Scottish Connection:

Neil Armstrong is also a descendant of Border Reivers. In 1972, he visited Langholm which is the traditional seat of Clan Armstrong. Wearing his clan kilt, he was piped into the town centre and made Freeman of the Burgh. The day before, Armstrong and his wife were in Edinburgh visiting the RAF club where he was made a member. Upon his death in 2012, a piper from the Scottish Borders played at Armstrong’s memorial service in Washington, D.C.

Event Details:

Sunday 21 July 2019

3:45 PM - 4:15 PM

Princes Street Gardens

We’ll take a picture of the group at 3:56 PM to celebrate the 50th anniversary.

We hope to see our Scottish geocaching friends and other cachers who are visiting Edinburgh. There will be prizes given away and, of course, an opportunity to swap trackables.
